Interesting. I was always under the impression that if I wanted to become an American, I would have to relinquish my other citizenships: not because Canada, the UK and NZ would insist I do so, but because America would require it.

Is this the true state-of-affairs?

How so? It's my impression that the US did not recognize "dual citizenship" until just a few years ago. It certainly did not recognize such in 1961. If Obama was a British subject then he most assuredly was not a US "natural born citizen"!
