It seems there is a difference between General Chairman and Chairman. Quinn Hillyer has the scoop.
As we at the Washington Examiner report today, Fred Thompson is feeling out a possible run for "General Chairman" of the Republican National Committee. But there is more detail to the story. First, note the distinction between "General Chairman" and "Chairman." The potential Thompson run envisions a two-tiered system like the one that worked under Reagan with Paul Laxalt as General Chairman (but that didn't work so well recently with Mel Martinez as General Chairman). The General Chairman usually provides overall direction and philosophical moorings, and acts as the public face of the party doing media and speeches, etc., and also is available probably for big-money phone calls and events -- but the Chairman, with an Executive Director under him, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the RNC. Think Chairman of the Board vs. CEO, perhaps.

Fred didn’t want it. I think he’ll be the next governor of tennessee. also want to see him back on L&O.
That’s perhaps the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Fred is “too nice”?
Oh, looks like a Huckabot. Fred wasn’t lackluster, he just got out too late and admits that. Fred was the only one in the field with anything substantive to offer. Too bad he didn’t catch on, but things happen for a reason. But throwing him — perhaps one of our few true statesmen — under the bus with your hatred is unbecoming and offensive.
I don’t like Huckabee but think he offers something to the party. So does Thompson. he has a role to play, it just wasn’t as President.
Exactly.
Hunter should be in there somewhere!
Cameron was also the one conducting the whispering campaign in the FNC newsroom about Thompson only being a stalking horse for McCain that led to him never being treated like a serious candidate. Funny how when the news that we think we can trust tells lies, there are always people ready to believe them. Cameron fancies himself some sort of kingmaker/giant killer and he is trying it again with Palin. Fortunately not as many people are falling for it this time around.
There may be hope afterall! ! ! !
.....And the 2008 Republican Spine Insertation Award goes to .....Rep. Broun of Georgia, for his dead on recent comments about the Marxist in Chief.
Why would you jump to that erroneous conclusion? I've never supported Huckabee for anything. FredBots must be prone to jumping to conclusions because how else could they conclude that Fred Thompson should run for President or now be the leader of the RNC?
Fred wasnt lackluster, he just got out too late
And whose fault was that?
Fred was the only one in the field with anything substantive to offer.
I recall when the Fred Cult was trying to promote Fred's candidacy on FR they would make claims like that. But even though one of the Fred Cult members put together a long list of Fred's supposed qualifications, I never found that Fred had anything of substance to offer anyone.
But throwing him perhaps one of our few true statesmen under the bus with your hatred is unbecoming and offensive.
Well first, I know that Fred has played "statesmen" in the movies, but in real life he's never been anything close to a "statesmen".
And second, your throwing around the word "hatred" reminds me of what I found to be the FredBots' worst character flaw. Anytime anyone dared to challenge Fred's qualifications, the FredBots would get their panties in a knot and throw around words like "hate". I think that's one of the things that turned off a lot of Freepers to Fred's candidacy.
Finally, IMO, in real life Fred has never demonstrated the kind of charisma, leadership, communication skills and understanding of conservative principles that the next RNC leader needs.
If you FredBots really want to promote Fred's candidacy for anything, you really have to get over the emotional reponses and stick to what you think are the facts that make Fred Thompson a qualified candidate.
I really wanted to like Fred as a candidate for the GOP nomination last year, but when I cut away the persona of the roles Fred played on TV and in the movies, I had to conclude that Fred may have been the least qualified of all the candidates for the nomination.
I see the word “mulls” is from your blog. The Wash Examiner used the words “feeling out”. Some posters here (who ought to be able to discern and recognize who is saying what) need to sharpen up their comprehension skills.
Regardless, I like the idea. Thompson being the face of the RNC and guiding policies would be win-win. He’s recognizable to the public from L&O and doesn’t have baggage or press demonization like Newt.
I have no probs with Newt being involved, but Thompson would be a better public face, fund raiser and philosophical grounding element.
thanks for the ping jb
Glad to hear it Fred....just don’t turn into a squish, please!
I love Fred, but is he tough enough for this job? He seems too easy-going. Also, isn’t he “best buds” with McCain? If so, I worry that he’s not conservative enough to bring around the GOP to where it needs to be.
Maybe his wife would be better. She didn’t take any guff from the pundits when grilled during the election.

Yes, yes, YESSSS!!! A thousand times yes!! Too much straying off the reservation. The RNC needs a strong, tough, steady hand at the helm. <

In all honesty, and I have no clue on how it comes about, but I would like to see all "political parties" gone! But I am sure I won't see it happen.
So, if the Republican Party is going to be the only place dedicated Constitutional conservatives have to place their vote they had better get back to the basics and using Fred Thompson as the titular head is just fine with me. Any of the other current "establishment" Republicans can go .... well you get my drift.
