Fred Thompson Mulling Run for Gen. Chairman of the RNC
The Patriot Room ^ | November 10, 2008 | Bill Dupray

Posted on 11/10/2008 4:36:19 PM PST by Bill Dupray

It seems there is a difference between General Chairman and Chairman. Quinn Hillyer has the scoop.

As we at the Washington Examiner report today, Fred Thompson is feeling out a possible run for "General Chairman" of the Republican National Committee. But there is more detail to the story. First, note the distinction between "General Chairman" and "Chairman." The potential Thompson run envisions a two-tiered system like the one that worked under Reagan with Paul Laxalt as General Chairman (but that didn't work so well recently with Mel Martinez as General Chairman). The General Chairman usually provides overall direction and philosophical moorings, and acts as the public face of the party doing media and speeches, etc., and also is available probably for big-money phone calls and events -- but the Chairman, with an Executive Director under him, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the RNC. Think Chairman of the Board vs. CEO, perhaps.

First, all my respect for Carl Cameron is going out the window, fast.

Second, I love the idea of Newt and Michael Steele being involved with the RNC. I would only want Fred Thompson in a symbolic role. His presidential campaign was really a joke and a disappointment for people pinning their hopes on him as the only real conservative in the race.

If the Party were equated to an NFL franchise, we are talking about picking a general manager right now. A pick like a Thomas Dimitroff or Bill Parcells can get this team turned around, and fast. On the other hand, a bad pick as GM will screw the party into the ground further.

NEWT NEWT NEWT

Is this another attempt to make his best friend McCain relevant again?

I wonder why McCain didn’t pick Fred for VP.

He’s up to something and that’s why he isn’t back on Law & Order yet despite a storyline written to bring him back and waiting for him.

I would say Fred, Mitt and Mike. Fred is a great vocal proponent of the Conservative principle and presents it in a way that is understandable to common people. Mitt is a great organizer, fund raiser and would be perfect for doing the day to day work of rebuilding the party structure and finances. I am not as sure what the Exec Dir does, but it would be great to see Mike involved somewhere. I think having Newt and Fred would be two of a kind at the top that is why I think Mitt makes ore sense as the operating executive. The man knows how to rebuild failing endeavors and that pretty much sums up the party at this point.

+1 for Michael Steele! Regarding Fred, um...his energy level was nill in the primary. Too much fumbling for words, also. I do like Newt if he focusses on tax and economic policy.

First we need to dump Mel Martinez and whoever is running the RNC. Fred might be a good choice, I’m not that well versed in his record. Here’s what I want to see from the ‘Pubbies:

1) A sharp turn to the right to return to their Reagan conservative principles
2) The sudden insertion of a spine in the current crop of elected Congressional ‘Pubbies
3) A willingness to get in the Dems’ face and stand toe-to-toe and battle it out with them
4) An end to RINOs
5) An end to compromise or negotiate with the Dems (next time, if there IS one, the ‘Pubbies gain control of one or both houses of Congress, NO sharing power with the Dems! Treat them the way they treat us - RAM our agenda down their throats and refuse to compromise)
6) Constant and never ending reminders of true conservative principles
7) Not allowing the Dems to bully or demagogue an issue - CALL THEM OUT when they are lying and prove the lie!!
8) Not being afraid to use the nuclear option if/when necessary. I guarantee you they aren’t
9) IMMEDIATELY iopening every promising area in the US to drilling and the develop of nuclear power

Whoever is up to the challenge, go for it. If that’s Fred, that’s fine but, if he isn’t up to it, then let’s get someone who is. We need to shut down the Republican country club, attract more minorities and STORM Congress in 2010!!!

The RNC needs someone who’s ruthless.

Yes, yes, YESSSS!!! A thousand times yes!! Too much straying off the reservation. The RNC needs a strong, tough, steady hand at the helm.

Is that the same Carl Cameron that is smearing Governor Sarah Palin? Great source you got there. Let us know what George Will, Christopher Buckley, Kathleen Parker, Peggy Noonan and Ronnie Reagan, Jr. have to say as well, will you?

Do republicans really want the greatest non-campaigner in recent history in charge of media and speeches? Keep your knee-jerk Fredhead responses. I liked Fred Thompson and supported him. He disappointed me immensely. I still like him, but he has to show me something before I’ll get behind him again. Fool me once ...

Sounds like those thousands of letters-to-the-editor: "As a life-long republican, it is my opinion that Barack Obama is the right choice, blah, blah, blah..."

Awfully strong language from someone who’s been a member for a grand total of 2 weeks. Hopefully you learn quickly.
