Why would a ship intending to dump dirty cargo leave the vast and desolate Indian Ocean and sail through the Suez into the small and busy Mediterranean?
They couldn’t find a bathroom.

Because if you read the book on the Chenobyl incident, those people were subjected to extreme radiation and it still took them longer then these people before they actually suffered sickness and death. They would have to have had spent nuclear fuel rods in those crates in order for those people to get sick and die. It’ a bunch of hokey that the sand was so radioactive that it caused people to get sick and die.
