(CBS) Could a matter of race decide the Presidential election? Few voters are willing to say so out loud. But what are they thinking in private? Our cover story is reported now by Bill Whitaker:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's the vexing issue hiding in plain sight.
"I know there are some people who won't vote for me because I'm black, and that's ok," said Democratic candidate Barack Obama.
Even as the economy seems to be in freefall, as Americans grapple with whether to vote for Obama, the first African American presidential nominee, or his Republican opponent, John McCain, it's a decision unavoidably colored by race, whether we like it - whether we admit it - or not.
When asked if race will affect a voter's decision, some say it is unavoidable, and that there are some voters who - issues aside - just arent ready to cross that racial divide at the polling booth.
Barack Obama, the son of a white American mother and a black father from Kenya, says his race is not an issue for him.

Race is a losing issue for Nobama.
And these shows that continue to raise race as a subject just bring it further into the forefront.
The more the MSM yap about it, the more it will backfire.
Not because people are “racist” - they’re just sick and tired of it getting thrown in the face.
the face = their face
fascinating that Obama goes by the one drop rule.
his mother is white but he is claiming blackness.
see also analogy clinton was a rapist but he was the feminists’ rapist.
Which party has been better for African-Americans? Republicans appointed two (2) Secretaries of State who were African-American. For those who don''t know anything about our government, that is the highest appointed post there is. The people I know who are against Senator Obama for president are against him because of his waffling on the issues, or his consistent support of Marxist economic policies.
And John McCain''s middle name is Sydney. Barack Obama''s middle name is Hussein. What is racist about that?
Even though he wrote a whole memoir about "race and inheritance," the whores and scoundrels at CBS believe him. Pathetic.
I totally agree. Let them continue this rhetoric it will be to their demise not ours. If the MSM continues to paint âwhitesâ as an angry crowd full of racism that is exactly what will happen and independents along with the old school dems that always vote their party will swing this election to McCain/Palin. Too many families including mine own fought for their equal rights in the civil war and in the 60âs. This is a slap in the face to many of us who believe in equality regardless of race, gender and won’t be tolerated. It isn’t being reported that the radio host who asked McCain to call Obama on associations has received hate mail and death threats and his is black.
That's true to a degree, but the purpose of these stories is twofold: to inflame the base of blacks, and make sure they turn out in droves; and in the process shame some white moderates and "independents" who otherwise might be tempted to vote on the issues. The 'rats undoubtedly have it figured out as a net gain.
