(CBS) Could a matter of race decide the Presidential election? Few voters are willing to say so out loud. But what are they thinking in private? Our cover story is reported now by Bill Whitaker:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's the vexing issue hiding in plain sight.
"I know there are some people who won't vote for me because I'm black, and that's ok," said Democratic candidate Barack Obama.
Even as the economy seems to be in freefall, as Americans grapple with whether to vote for Obama, the first African American presidential nominee, or his Republican opponent, John McCain, it's a decision unavoidably colored by race, whether we like it - whether we admit it - or not.
When asked if race will affect a voter's decision, some say it is unavoidable, and that there are some voters who - issues aside - just arent ready to cross that racial divide at the polling booth.
Barack Obama, the son of a white American mother and a black father from Kenya, says his race is not an issue for him.

I am sorry to say that your story on this mornings show about racism in the presidential race was, well, racist. I missed part of it when I had to leave the room to vomit from what I was seeing, but all I saw on the show were accusations about whites being racist, but nothing about the 95% of blacks who are going to vote for Mr. Obama, because of , umm, HIS RACE. You see HE IS BLACK, and so are they. Sounds like racism to me.
No Republican of note has ever mentioned this mans race during this campaign. The only people who have are, DEMOCRATS, who are trying to use the old white guilt tactic to shame people into voting for a person who has no business being a candidate. They bring it up and then sling it back at their followers as scare tactics. For you to suggest that Sarah Palin uses racist code words, while Mr Obama has a pastor who spews racist vile weekly from his pulpit, uncoded, is sickening. It is you who just planted the seed of racism, again.
I have one question that you didn't seem to ask yourself before reporting this disgusting story and that is , how can Mr Obama even have a chance without whites voting for him? I guess if you don't vote for him it couldn't possibly be because you disagree with the plans that he has for this country.
Please be fair when you do reports like this. For your racist report on racism, you get an F and should be ashamed to call this journalism.
“I know there are some people who won’t vote for me because I’m black, and that’s ok,”
...and it’s ok with me too Hussein!
(credit goes to CindyDawg for her initial post on this matter.)
Democrats the party of fear and paranoid hate mongering, Jim Jones spoke like this.
The only problem I have is that Obama really isn’t black. His ethnic heritage leads toward being Arab...NOT black. Check his father out in Kenya and you will agree. I think if any normal black guy understood this completely...he’d have a laugh and agree that Obama is mostly white and Arab....not black.
I wonder if that is an actual person, or a composite the reporter made up to prove a point. Not that I would expect CBS News to make something up during an election campaign, but ...
I suggest keeping a copy ready to send again, since the media will probably ramp up use of the race card as Nov. 4 draws closer.
Since they've given up any pretense of responsible journalism, they might as well go all out, including possible incitement to riot.
They just don’t get it. That kind of tactic just doesn’t work, in fact, I think it really pisses people off more than anything and pushes them farther away than actually considering voting for him. Why do you think that they think that? It just builds more resentment, not inspire guilt. People just say, what do I have to feel guilty about anyway?
Mind boggling isn’t it? It shows you the total lack of character on their part. Clintons did nothing but pander to them.
Ignore the networks, they exist to make us mad and depressed, good news here.

While you are technically correct.....in America, most persons believe the definition of “blackness” is formed by answering the following question:
Would Robert Byrd try to lynch me?
playing the race card
what happened to barry’s half white side. its never mentioned. im not voting for him because he is white.
On top of it all, during the whole 90 minutes that this show is on, there must have been 10 Nobama ads and I don’t think I saw one McCain ad. BTW why isn’t Sarah Palin in any McCain ads?
i dont think mc cain is trying to win.
mccain is trying to be nice.
nice like bob dole
nice like bush sr
there is no honor in losing nicely.
It’s all that racist Whitey’s fault.
For your racist report on racism, you get an F and should be ashamed to call this journalism.
Lol, I doubt they would even make that claim about that propaganda piece.
