Over at the L.A. Times' The Dish Rag blog, Elizabeth Snead wonders how Newsweek got Governor Sarah Palin to pose "with a rifle" for the cover of its next issue? Snead then reveals that it was not a new photo but an old one, that the Governor did not pose for the cover at all, and wonders if it is right for the magazine to use the photo as they did? I suppose Snead wasn't really too worried about the photo, but she did just prove that she has no idea what a "rifle" is because Palin is holding a shotgun, not a rifle, in the cover photo.
Snead tries to give a ribbing to Governor Palin for holding the "rifle" over her shoulder with the barrel pointing toward the ground and the breach open with the shoulder stock draped over her left shoulder. Showing she has no idea how a firearm works, Snead wonders if Palin could "shoot" her "foot off like that?"
Hey, is that even the right way to hold a rifle? Can't you shoot your foot off like that?
What we have here is another denizen of Hollywood that knows zip about firearms. Palin is not holding a rifle. And even if it were a breachloading rifle, with the breach cracked open, draped over a shoulder, one cannot shoot one's foot off regardless. A breach must be closed before any foot shooting can be in the offing...

I am.... speechless..... Where in the world do you start with all the problems with this statement?
Nice pic, and yes, Elizabeth Snead is clueless. I’m glad she exposed her ignorance for all to sneer at in return.
I don’t know anything about rifles and shot guns, but that looks as though it is a shot gun and it is “open” and not locked....
Am i correct? An open shot gun cant fire?
Oh dear. You'd think that if you were going to put something that stupid into writing, you might google "guns," or something.
Great photo. I suppose Newsweek meant this as an attack, but this is going to go over well with middle America. It sure as hell works for me.
You are exactly correct, that is a shotgun and you carry it like that, open, precisely so it doesn’t fire. Carrying it, breach open, is the safe.
Yes, it does. When will we see that on the front of “Time?”
Yes! Great photo. I bought that magazine solely for that photo (to infuriate liberals I know). I sure as hell did not buy it for the crap inside.
It's not a rifle, it's a shotgun and the breech is open. And no a shotgun can't fire with it's breech open.
Idiot liberals.
Anybody have that picture?
Since Sarah got the nod, I’ve joined the NRA and got my Beretta .380 from the ‘80’s out of storage. Only problem is, I can’t pull back the slide (am I using the correct term?) Also applied for a FOID. Now I need to trade in the Beretta for something more user friendly. Any suggestions??
Al Gore practicing his lack of gun safety in Viet Nam...
Hey Liz, honey! Is that any way to hold a keyboard? Can’t you shoot off your mouth like that? (And in your case, a mouth wound would mean you’d also get a foot wound.)
The author might have been even more effective in his evisceration of the LA Times writer had he paid more attention to the difference between a "breach" and a "breech"...
I wonder if warrior Al cleaned the trigger while looking into the barrel...
Heck, I even screw that one up all the time typing too fast and not paying attention.
—Paleontology is the science of the forms of life existing in former geologic periods, as represented by their fossils.—
I think this is more telling then the picture. Palin-tol-ogy is a refernce to peleontology. The implication being that Palin is a fossil or dinasaour.
