I’ve been thinking this is more like Quayle.

His IQ dropped fifty points when he was asked by Bush to be his running mate.

Remember how nasty the press was to him? He said he wore their scorn like a badge of honor on his sleeve.

I disagree with your disagreement, but then agree with your second sentence, which agrees with my postulation: They want to drag her down into their own wallowing muck, which is where they are most comfortable with ... Sarah being a 'traditional conservative' is NOT in the muck, and so they need to drag her into their own little mucky world as a means of control. And if she resists? Destroy her.
