I attend the "fine" learning "establishment" known as LHS, Laurel High School (and before anyone says anything, I chose to go to this school because I felt it was my duty as a Catholic Republican to actually be someone who's gonna stand up for what I believe, evangilize, if you will.) I'm in AP Government there along with two honors courses and three regular (one which is a Junior/Senior class, Psychology, while I, myself, am a Sophomore) classes. Our lunch period is known as "Spartan Hour" (our school mascot is the Spartan -which is SO epic, only reason I like the school).
So, this year the county (Prince George's county) has decided we need to take an eighth class. This deciscion was apparently passed for every school, so we're not "special". This class is known fondly as your "Advisory" period. You're assigned with a group of fellow students to a teacher who isn't in any of your real classes. Advisory is basically a "get to know you" class, so that way a teacher will know us "personally" and be able to help us with "problems". Yeah, like it's really gonna work.
Annywho, now that the explanations are done, to the story.
I was transferred to a different "advisory" yesterday. I get there, the teacher puts my name in the system, and I go sit in a seat, throwing down my backpack on the floor (which has a "Friends don't let friends vote democrat" button on it, by the way.) and lean forward on the desk, a bit tired from my amount of homework and how heavy my bag is. Skip to when the entire class (everyone was transferred to this teacher today, by the way, and I might want to also add I am the only white kid in this entire class of 15- I believe thats the number- other than the teacher) is sitting around one big table (this was an art room) and the teacher was going around the circle, asking our names and what our main interests are. I'm spacing out because the only way to get a grade in this class is to show up, and I was considering catching up on my sleep, when I hear one girl say, "Oh, psssssh, McCain is BOMBIN'!" (which is ghetto slang, normally anyway, for cool, if you didn't know) and my first thought is "O_O OMG! NO WAY! Someone in this school is on my side...fighting with me!! Yay!". I then turn to her, smiling "Wait, you're for McCain?" She gives me the stupidest look and says "Whatchutalkinbout? Nuh-uh!" and I turn away with a disappointed face "Oh..."
The girl then turns to me, bewildered, and points her finger "wait, you fo' McCain??" I nod, replying that I am, and she rebuttals (as the entire class gasps in total shock either that I am, or that I'm admitting it, or probably both) "Nuh-uh! You not!" I pull my button from my shirt forward and nod again, laughing a bit "Yeeah I am!" and, to my shock, she flings herself on the table at me screaming things incoherently (one of which I made out to be "it's cause he be black, ain't it?!" which I did yell "No, I wouldn't care if he were purple" her not hearing that yelling "it's cause he looks different than you!!" and I yelled "PALIN LOOKS DIFFERENT THAN EVERYONE IN THE RACE!") at me and flailing her arms as several guys next to her walk to the opposite side of the room, making a dramatic point that they think I'm an idiot. After she calms down a bit, at least to a point where I can understand her screaming and pick it out from the rest of the classes screaming, I hear her asking me "why the hell" I'm for McCain. I open my mouth to explain, maybe pull out a few articles I've got printed out as evidence and proof to prove my point, and she won't even be quiet to let me. I keep trying to break through the yelling, the teacher trying to calm things down, raising my voice some to be heard. The teacher tells her to calm down and she says "I was jus' tryin' t'ask her why she likes him!" and the teacher says "Then let her talk and stop attacking her!" I thank her, and try to proceed with my reasons, and the girl keeps going! I manage to get one thing in, saying, "Look, if you really wanna know why I'm for him, ask me during Spartan Hour" and she crosses her arms "I don' wanna ask yo durin' Spartan Hour!!", to which I respond "then why do you keep bugging me about it since you don't wanna know so bad?"
My teacher tries again to go on, the girl finally having pulled her body off the table and having stopped flailing her arms, she says "Weal, lemme just sa' one mo' thing! Whyyy would you want someone who is just annother Bush and is gonn' screw up our economy more and it's his fault cause he be votin' against the things that gonn' fix it!" Now, I've been being made fun of and harassed by teachers and the majority of the student population, and I figured I needed to stop turning the other cheek and stop them from thinking these lies (one of my teachers likes making Palin seem like an idiotic woman who isn't fit to run, although the teacher is a woman herself) and I raise my arm, and my voice, and yell "That is not true at all! You need to get your facts straight before you start saying all of this!!"
She then raises her voice again and says that she has her facts straight, I don't have mine straight. I insist that mine are correct and not from the media, and she needs to get hers straight. It goes on a bit longer until the teacher intervenes, yet again, telling us not to discuss politics in class. It calms down, and in annoyance and defeat the girl who was yelling at me turns around and crosses her arms, cussing me out to her "homeies". I turn to the side, annoyed because I know this is the start of yet another class I'm going to be bullied in. MY teacher tells us to stop sulking, so she turns around, me still remaining facing the side, looking at the wall at the art class posters to note what I know as to what I don't. Some of the students then ask her "You votin' fo Obama?" and she nods, adding in "I wouldn't vote for McCain if you paid me"
...
Ladies and Gentlemen! Welcome to the life of a 15-year-old pro-life, Republican White girl in the PG County school system!
Four years ago a middle school kid came into my classroom yelling he was voting for Kerry. I stopped him and told him he can't just blurt that out without explaining why he's for or against either candidate. Of course, he hadn't a clue about Kerry so we spent the hour perusing FR. He still remembers that day. While he's not a convert, he has moved from RAT to Independent.
Smart dad, smart daughter.
The apple did not fall far from the tree.
Keep us clued in on your exploits among the politically deranged. You might teach us a thing or two.
I sincerely wish you the best of luck.
hey, hey, hey! My dad resembles nothing to Martin O’Malley! Don’t even go there :P
if he saw that post he’d call ya out!! ;]
Me? Teach something? Like what, lol?
And I shall, I was shocked with all the views and replies to my first ever thread ._.
and I’m sure my dad shall appreciate that :D
thank you so much!
My daughters faced much the same thing in high school here in California. They managed to survive but are facing similar issues in college, even though the colleges they are attending are not known for liberal activism, and you should hear my stepchildren, who attended UC Santa Cruz and Reed. Truly frightening in their indoctrination.
Let them know they’re not alone, and keep fighting! They’ll probably have more an influence as long as they’ve got facts (which is how I stump everyone) and plus their age. The older you are the less people ignore your ideas/thoughts. They’re in my prayers :]
God Bless You Helen and Stand Strong!
I shall! Thanks so much :D
Sorry to hear about your day, but I think we all can expect these kinds of experiences will get more and more frequent. If you can't find any conservative students to hang with, I guarantee there are some Republican teachers there, laying low. Just ask around -- you'll be surprised.
I know this because I am a middle school teacher in the absolute heart of liberalism: Massachusetts. I was surprised to discover as many conservative teachers on the staff as I did.
Good luck, and keep posting.
All the best Our Lord can offer you, my FRiend.
I’ll be praying.
Sheesh
Hey, I used to wait tables at Bay n’ Surf.
Stay strong; but it sounds like you’re doing that.
Thanks for the tip, I read as much as possible during the summer and would during the school year if I weren’t buried under my homework.
I know of a few conservative teachers, and one of my best friends at school is Republican and starting to join the fight (he took off someone’s Obama pin today and threw it on the floor, stomping on it).
And I shall keep posting, probably telling more horror stories.
Oh, and I’ve been getting this all ever since the second week of school and this week is...I think the fifth or sixth.
thanks so very much, I need all the prayers I can get.
I liked your ebonics.
Ah, I went there once before it closed down.
Thanks for your support :D
xDDDDDDDDDDDDD
thanks, “I tellz it lyk I seez it”
