My point was clear, I wasn't signing on to the "arab" thing, I was merely pointing out that Barack is in NO WAY an "African-American" in the cultural sense of the term. He's not. Being African-American does NOT mean that your daddy was from Africa, it means that you are descended from slaves and that your distant and immediate ancestors experienced bigotry and suppression (and hopefully overcame them). Period! I dare anyone to explain to me how Barack Obama has ever experienced what it's like to be an "African-American". He hasn't. Period. His experience is only that of the priveledged elite.

I see your point. But that's because over the past few years "African-American" has come to replace "Black" or "Negro" or "Afro-American" or whatever the designation for 1/8 of our population was. In a literal sense, though, Obama is an "African-American."

Yes, but I made it very clear that my use of the term was strictly in the "cultural" sense, not the "literal" sense. According to the literal sense, if his father had been a white South African, even a leader of apartheid or even one that advocated the extermination of the native Africans, then Obama would still be an "African-American"...at least by your definition. I think it's pretty universally accepted that when people say "African-American", they mean it in the cultural sense. But, your point is taken.

My understanding is, but I am not an expert, some groups call themselves as Arabs, possibly for status reasons, and officially they are classified as Arabs. Officially there are black Arabs in Africa. The world media report the fighting in Sudan as being between the Arab militias and native Africans.

In the case of Obama Snr, I do not dispute he is definitely African, but he may be officially classified as an Arab-African.

Luos are not "Afro-Arabs." The Afro-Arabs you speak of are fairly common in placed like the Sudan and Chad. They are racially mixed folks who speak Arabic as their first language.
