Republican appropriators in the House of Representatives signaled they have no intention of going along with John McCain's crusade against congressional earmarking should he become president.
No surprise. These guys need to dry up.

"The Constitution is very specific and very clear about who appropriates money," Young said. "Not all earmarks are pork-barrel spending." And yet you won't find one word in the Constitution about earmarks, or about amendments that attach special spending projects like ornaments on a Christmas tree.
To: vadum
"The Constitution is very specific and very clear about who appropriates money," Yeah, unfortunately, McCain pretty much ignores that document, so you'll have to rationalize your spending addiction another way, Congressman.

First of all a veto is not a powergrab. Second of all, gridlock? We should be so lucky!

Gentlemen, you are about to become famous, for all the wrong reasons.

I got whacked a bit here on FR when I mentioned that there were a lot of unhappy “Republicans” that would be against McCain/Palin. Mostly in the Senate tho. Notice how few Senators are stumping for McCain/Palin?

Republican appropriators in the House of Representatives signaled they have no intention of going along with John McCain's crusade against congressional earmarking should he become president. Out on the stump, John McCain gets wild applause each time he promises as president to veto every spending bill that contains an earmark. I'd actually like to see McCain compromise on this one, but only as a tactical move to split the opposition. What if McCain demanded that the next budget have no more than half as much in earmarks as the 2008 budget? Wouldn't that split even the pro-earmark legislators and get them fighting over which earmarks to save? Simply putting a declining ceiling on earmarks might kill them with a lot more certainty than trying to go cold turkey.
I am aware of the down side of this approach. If McCain doesn't kill earmarks completely, that form of waste might come back bigger than ever when he needs something special from congress. I'm not sure the slow approach is better than cold turkey, but I hope we're keeping the long term goal in mind.

28 years in the House of Representatives and this fool has a cement ear. Has he no clue about the mood of the country? Does he not understand how the media works? Does he not realize that such remarks are what the mainstream media is trolling for?
Does he not understand John McCain? McCain would love nothing better than to take on someone in his own party. McCain will prove how resolute he is and what a maverick he is.
God save us from our own
