Summary
We’ve been flooded for the past few days with queries about dubious Internet postings and mass e-mail messages making claims about McCain’s running mate, Gov. Palin. We find that many are completely false, or misleading.

* Palin did not cut funding for special needs education in Alaska by 62 percent. She didn’t cut it at all. In fact, she increased funding and signed a bill that will triple per-pupil funding over three years for special needs students with high-cost requirements.

* She did not demand that books be banned from the Wasilla library. Some of the books on a widely circulated list were not even in print at the time. The librarian has said Palin asked a “What if?” question, but the librarian continued in her job through most of Palin’s first term.

* She was never a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, a group that wants Alaskans to vote on whether they wish to secede from the United States. She’s been registered as a Republican since May 1982.

* Palin never endorsed or supported Pat Buchanan for president. She once wore a Buchanan button as a “courtesy” when he visited Wasilla, but shortly afterward she was appointed to co-chair of the campaign of Steve Forbes in the state.

* Palin has not pushed for teaching creationism in Alaska’s schools. She has said that students should be allowed to “debate both sides” of the evolution question, but she also said creationism “doesn’t have to be part of the curriculum.”

From the first paragraph:

"WE HAVE NO RECORDS OF ANY BOOKS BEING 'BANNED OR CENSURED(sp) EVER"

Guess that makes the point pretty clear, huh?

That's what the city press release says: No books were ever banned. Citizens requested the library reconsider the purchase of a few books, but none were ever banned.

What’s absolutely outrageous about this is that there are some books that absolutely SHOULD be banned from any public library—like books that promote homosexuality or any other deviant lifestyle to children.

Indeed.

I’m taking it to work. My popularity is about to drop another 50 points.

Some filth left on an LAPL computer might have likely led to a law enforcement anywhere else. I backed it out, but am really bothered that this would have been open to any 10 year old who happened to just come along.

If you look at the list, you will see that, indeed, no books were banned. One was moved to a newly created section of the library, the rest “remained on shelf”.

“Heather Has Two Mommies”
///////////////
Now the one “Obama has two Daddies....aka Larry Sinclair”, that one has apparently been banned by the Obambi-Biden gestapo.

THe MSM and Leftist make a big deal of the fact that Sarah ASKED about book banning.

This is CONSISTENT with what everyone says about her, that she digs in, she talks to everybody, she asks questions. She ASKED. And the very fact that the Library has a policies and procedures for REQUESTING that a book be banned makes the fact that Sarah wanted to be informed about it makes Sarah ABSOLUTELY in the RIGHT.

Hold on everybody, this “press release” is obviously a phony.

It’s not real, here’s why:

The Chosen One said that the name of the town is “Wasilly.”

The idiot who forged this document spelled the name “Wasilla.”

Instantly DEBUNKED!

:)

> The Left caught lying again. Truth has no meaning to these people <

We must realize that the contemporary Left is composed mainly of post-modernists, who think there is no such thing as "truth" -- only a set of power relationships between/among the various classes of society.

Moreover, these creeps believe that words have no fixed meaning, and that language itself is fundamentally a tool stolen by the white-male power structure to oppress the masses.

Absolutely.

Palin simply discussed with the city Librarian how/why objectionable material is dealt with & is a sign that she is doing her job a mayor. GOOD FOR HER...most mayors aren’t intellectually curious enough to even think to ask.

And EVERY library has a procedure that allows material to be challenged. Which is precisely what Palin was inquiring about...

The link didn't work and also opening up a .pdf file is a hassle and takes way too long......that's why posting the actual information if possible is helpful.

I'll take your word for it though....

CITY OF WASILLA
•Office of the Mayor•
290 East Herning Avenue • Wasilla • Alaska • 99654 ·7091
• Telephone 907·373·9055 • Fax 907·373·9096 •
We at the City of Wasilla have received many emails and requests for information about “banned or censored” books at the Wasilla Library while former Mayor Palin was in office. We have no records of any books being “banned or censored” ever.
Below is the policy to request reconsideration of library materials:
Reconsideration Requests of Library Materials
In accordance with the Wasilla Public Library Collection Development Policy, the library, “…strives to achieve a balanced collection of materials in the major information categories, as well as a fiction collection calculated to satisfy the widest possible variety of tastes. All viewpoints and opinions on controversial subjects will be represented whenever possible… Wasilla Public Library recognizes the right of every citizen to read and gather information, and his or her right to freedom from censorship by other persons. Many books are controversial and any given item may offend some persons. However, selections for this library will not be made on the basis of anticipated approval or disapproval, but solely on the merits of the material in relation to the building of the collection and to serving the interests of all readers. This library holds censorship to be a purely individual matter and declares that – while anyone is free to reject for himself books and other materials of which he does not approve – he cannot exercise this right of censorship to restrict the freedom of others.”
The Library conducts a systematic process whenever a Matanuska-Susitna Library Network cardholder requests the reconsideration of an item in the library collection. The first step in the process is the patron speaking with the library director, who listens to the patron concerns and explains how materials are selected for the library’s collection. It is the policy of Wasilla Public Library that all challenged materials remain in circulation until a final decision is reached and a challenged item may go through the reconsideration process only once within a twelve month period.
Our records indicate the following actions requested by library patrons:
Year of Challenge
Item Challenged
Result
1986
Angel Dust Blues by Todd Strasser
Creation of “Young Adult” section in library and placement of item in section
1986
Bumps in the Night by Harvey Allard
Remained on shelf
1997
Heather Has Two Mommies by Leslea Newman
Remained on shelf
2005
America (The Book): A Citizen’s Guide to Democracy Inaction by Jon Stewart
Remained on shelf
2007
The Abduction by Mette Newth
Remained on shelf
Thank you for your interest in the Wasilla Public Library policy.
Mayor Dianne M. Keller

Yup.

I don’t believe Sarah was even on the City Council in ‘86.
That shouldn’t even be on the “list”...
