Sen. Barack Obama — locked in a tight presidential race against Sen. John McCain, widely considered a war hero — said in an interview broadcast Sunday that he once considered joining the military himself.Speaking to ABC's "This Week," Obama said, "You know, I had to sign up for Selective Service when I graduated from high school. And I was growing up in Hawaii, and I have friends whose parents were in the military. There are a lot of Army, military bases there. And I actually always thought of the military as an enobling and, you know, honorable option.
"But keep in mind — I graduated in 1979. The Vietnam War had come to an end. We weren't engaged in an active military conflict at that point. And so, it's not an option that I ever decided to pursue."
Yup, the reason he didn't join was because the war was over. Just the bad luck of being born too late. He is implying that, had he graduated a few years earlier, he would have joined out of dedication and service to the country. A frustrated patriot - that's Barry.
It is probably more accurate to say that he's lucky he's not a few years older, because guys like him, radical left-wingers, were burning the flag, running to Canada, and trying to blow up the Capitol and the Pentagon. And that usually disqualifies you from being President.

B.O. Started his downward descent from superstardom when he showed off his “world leader status” overseas. Americans don’t care whether you get along with Germany, France, etc. when you are JUST A CANDIDATE! I graduated in 1980. I signed up for selective service (we all did or risked being in violation of the law...big whup.). I joined ROTC and got a scholarship. I wore my uniform on campus and endured the jerks in the second hand fatigue jackets making stupid remarks. I graduated and served. He could have made the same choice but didn’t. Read his book. While I was learning the 54 command sequence and doing my drilling...he was bashing America at black power rallies at Occidental college and going to Marxist speeches at Cooper Union. What a sham. I love the way Barrack rewrites history as though none of us have a memory but him. Classic jerk.
I saw it, yes it was a jaw dropper and outright lie. I believe the questioning line started out regarding whether hussein ever registered for the selective service.
It seems the only one to go after hussein and have it stick in the American psyche is Palin. Does she have to carry the load in this area?
Lying SOS. I joined in 1978 and I was stationed aboard the USS Henry B. Wilson (DDG-7) from 1979-1984. The USN is in a more or less constant state of combat readiness training and I found it plenty exciting. When was the last time the USN was in head to head combat with a worthy adversary - 1941-1945? More of the same BS from the most complete LIAR in politics today. Absolutely PATHETIC

Exactly — the guy has written two more memoirs (that’s two more than just about anyone alive and under 50), given countless speeches over years, yet this tidbit about his supposed interest in joining the military just comes out now? Does not pass the laugh test!!!
