Apparently, some people have tried to get copies from Hawaii to no avail. Usually they are only released to certain blood relatives, but I don’t know how they could adequately know who is a relative and who is pretending to be one.

I went to the Hawaii website and indeed only relatives can get it, but the person whose birth certificate is being requested can authorize others to receive it.

“An applicant/requestor must provide the information needed to 1) establish his/her direct and tangible interest in the record ....

If you are applying for a certificate on behalf of someone else, you must provide an original letter signed by that person authorizing the release of their certificate to you. “

I would say that we all DO have a “direct and tangible interest” in Obama’s birth certificate, since he may be our President.

Any lawyers out there want to try for this angle?
