POLITICS AS USUAL
I've spent that past several years trying to stay away from politics. Sure, I pay attention to the news, and I'm interested in what's going on in my country, but to be very honest, the deepest and most powerful problems in my country, the United States of America, are not going to be solved by politicians in Washington, no matter who they are or what they say. Hence I really don't care that much about what politicians say or do, for is seems that all they really do is make a good situation bad, and a bad situation worst.
For the past two years, we Americans have been hearing nothing from the news media but the wonders and the joys of a certain Barack Obama, a senator from the great state of Illinois where I live. It seemed as if there was nothing that was going to stand in his way to becoming the next president of the United States, as the Republican party had no one who could match his charisma and magnetism. And this man, Barack Obama, was the change and hope that American could believe in.
Somehow, due to reasons that are beyond my understanding, the Republicans of America decided that John McCain was the best of the many, many candidates that campaigned to be the next president, despite the fact that his campaign was declared dead and broken, and despite the fact that there are a LOT of Republicans who do not like him at all. Some think that many Democrats, who could care less if either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton were chosen, crossed over to the Republican primaries and intentionally voted for McCain to be the candidate of choice, as it seemed he would be the easiest for either Hillary or Barack to beat. I, for one, agreed with that sentiment, and thought all McCain could do is mark the days until his defeat at the hands of the Democratic nominee.
But something very interesting has happened on the way to the national election, something that absolutely no one expected....
OLD AGE AND TREACHERY BEAT YOUTH AND SKILL EVERY TIME
The Democrats had their convention last week, a very lavish affair that was well orchestrated, professionally produced, and huge in scope. The last day of the convention featured Barack Obama accepting the nomination of his party in a huge football field, in front of tens of thousands of adoring fans.
Normally a spectacle like that, and the buzz it creates, would be the talk of the nation for days on end. But in this particular case, it wasn't. The thrill and excitement were dead within twelve hours, despite the best hopes and intentions of the Democratic party.
John McCain, the lame Republican choice to be the next president, decided that the day after Obama accepted his party's endorsement would be a very good time for him to announce his choice of a vice presidential running mate. Just about everyone thought it would be Mitt Romney, or the governor of Minnesota, Tim Pawlenty. Both men were solid, if unexceptional choices, but neither choice would do no harm, which is basically the first attribute one looks for when choosing a vice president.
But McCain, to the literal surprise of everyone, picked a running mate no one expected: Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, the largest state in the Union, but with the smallest population. And suddenly, as Palin gave her speech introducing herself and her family, no one was talking about Barack Obama anymore.
In one of the most shocking and well played political stunts I've ever seen in my entire life, John McCain stole the thunder from Obama, and handed it over to a bright, beautiful, young woman from Alaska who is now taking America--and even the world--by storm. Her infectious enthusiasm and bright optimism made everyone take notice, and for the next several days, the only way the Democrats could make anyone notice them is by their increasingly stupid and sloppy attacks against Palin and her family. Barack was yesterday's news.
This past Wednesday, Sarah Palin took the stage at the Republican convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, and proceeded to demonstrate that her optimism and joy were the real deal, as she launched a devastating and incredibly accurate critique of Barack Obama by comparing him to herself! All the time never falling into the trap of anger and bitterness, but mocking and ridiculing him like no one has ever had the courage to do, and doing it with a smile on her face and a spring in her step. There was no doubt she was genuinely enjoying herself!
And Sarah Palin, within a handful of days, did something that John McCain could never do: completely unified the entire Republican party, energized it, and made them believe, for perhaps the first time, that they could actually beat Obama in the upcoming national election.
FAKE HISTORY AND THE REAL DEAL
For months, if not years, Americans have been told time and time again how "historic" and "unprecedented" was the campaign of Barack Obama, how it was a history making event that would change the whole world. But now nobody cares, as John McCain has made a truly historic choice that has rocked the political world in a very genuine and exciting way, a choice that will have repercussions for years to come. Rather than playing it safe, he took one of the most incredible risks in the history of presidential politics, and is now reaping huge rewards that is consistent with such a gamble.
For the first time in two years, Barack Obama is on the defensive, and it's obvious his campaign doesn't know how to handle this latest threat. For the simple truth is that Barack Obama's only credentials for being president is that he's a good orator and half African. Other than that, there is nothing on his resume or in his career that would have a reasonable person believe this person should be running the United States of America. He's gotten as far as he has do to a very biased and adoring press, who has done nothing but praise and encourage his candicy, and had done it with the nearly unanimous support of the Hollywood entertainment industry, including some of the biggest names in the business.
But there was one very particular group that Barack did not win over, and that was the adoring and committed followers of his only serious opponent: Hillary Clinton. Rather than courting and wooing their support, it was very obvious his campaign wanted to have little to do with Clinton, and did the least possible accommodate Hillary's base. Hence, he left a lot of women feeling they had gotten the cold shoulder, and they had.
McCain, seeing the incredibly stupid, vain and self-serving way the Obama campaign through Hillary and her supporters under the bus, did what a good politician should do when he sees an opportunity: he went for it. Noticing the bitterness that Clinton's supporters openly displayed towards Obama, he chose a strong, powerful, beautiful and intelligent woman to be his running mate, no doubt to demonstrate that if Obama didn't want them, he certainly did! And within hours of his naming Palin as his vice president, many Hillary supporters started voicing their open support for the McCain/Palin ticket!
Never in my life have I ever have been witness to a turn of events such as this. A campaign that should have been a sacrificial lamb for the might of the Obama machine is now the one with all the momentum and excitement, and has the most liked candidate in the person of Sarah Palin.
Now it's only a matter of how big McCain will win in November. Some are saying, because of Palin, his ticket will get 60% of the national vote. In American politics, that is a landslide.
But whatever happens, there is no doubt that McCain's decision to go with Palin is one of the most brilliant in American political history. For that alone he certainly deserves my vote, and yours too.

The mere fact that we are having this useless conversation about Obami's salad days is proof this loser hasn't done a damn thing when he had great opportunities to do so in the Illinois State legislature and U.S. Senate.

I agree that we have a chance to win (and possibly win big)...but it’s imperative that we take nothing for granted. We assume the worse and proceed as though we’ll just squeak by.
Well, Rudy did it half an hour earlier - but the point is still valid. Obama needs only to be assaulted to be overthrown - excessive deference to his race was the only thing that allowed him to get as far as he did.
I really didn't want Wednesday night to end. It was too good and it was very Cathartic for the GOP. We've been beat up for so long. I just want the Obami to have the rug pulled out from under him so badly.
but, but.....life is funny.....and I've never seen this Sarah Palin phenomenon in my life of over 50 yrs, so who knows...
IF, and that's a big IF, McCain pulls out a miracle, I will be there in DC for the inaugural....
