Swiftboating Defined
The Virginian ^ | 8/19/2008 | Moneyrunner

Via Glenn Reynolds: "In order to Swift Boat John McCain you will need his fellow POWs to come out and say he is bloviating, etc. Swift Boating means someone who was there who knows you are full of hot air is on your tail. Not, I repeat not, what the left wants it to mean. The only way John McCain can be Swift Boated is if someone who was there with him causes McCain's campaign to scramble to answer the allegations. Otherwise, this is desperation by the left who sees their guaranteed win slipping away." It'll get uglier before it's over.

Unless they can show he killed another POW or was having dinner with Ho, what’s the point? Haven’t they had decades to smear his record?

One of the underlying points of the 1984 novel was to actually show that the left is totally (no pun intended)under impression that words will mean whatever the left wants them to mean at the given moment. Old sickness.

Swift boating should be defined as the exposing of a poltroon who inflates his biography.

This is often confused, quite deliberately by the mainstream media, with "borking" which should be defined as "attack viciously a candidate or appointee, especially by misrepresentation in the media.” According to William Safire in The New York Times.

Our mission on FreeRepublic should be to "Swift boat" the unworthy and to prevent the "borking" of the worthy.

I’m not certain, but I think that was alleged a long time ago and dismissed out-of-hand. I’m sufering from old-timers and can’t be sure.

To me, “Swiftboating” means to tell the truth about a liar. That’s why the left sees the term as a perjorative. Example: They think John Edwards was “Swiftboated” by the National Enquirer.

Interestingly, Edwards’ hometown paper admitted today that they had the story and sat on(ie. censored) it.

Attacking the integrity of Senator John McCain’s story from the Hanoi Hilton is pretty silly. The only people who can really challenge the story are other POWs — and the only POWs who have publicly spoken so far have been very supportive of McCain.

The Democrats are beside themselves that their so-called “war hero” (Kerry) got attacked by virtually every sailor and officer he served with in Vietnam, and they can’t do the same thing to McCain.

"'For certain purposes, of course, that is not true. Whe we navigate the ocean, or when we predict an eclipse, we often find it convenient to assume that the earth goes round the sun and that the stars are millions upon millions of kilometres away. But what of it? Do you suppose it is beyond us to produce a dual system of astronomy? The stars can be near or distant, according as we need them. Do you suppose our mathematicians are unequal to that? Have you forgotten doublethink?'"
