Protestants, fearing that Catholic parents would teach their kids Catholic beliefs, took over the public school system to enforce the protestant hegemonic view.
Later when the hegemonic view became secular humanism, the protestants worked themselves into a tizzy.

I think the problem with our public schools is that they are public schools. When has government ever done something right?

The first law requiring Schools in this country was the Massachusetts School Law of 1647 which became known as "Ye Old Deluder Satan Act". It's purpose was to teach children to read the Bible.

Those kids who thought Gummint school was too hard in the 50s became parents in the 70s and went to school board meetings to make school more fun and less academic. All these low skill programs are there now because those 50s kids wanted to party and now they are grandparents and their kids’ kids are learning nothing in Gummint school. Blame it on the teachers, but teachers could not do this if the parents didn’t want it.

The main original point of this author seems to be his conflation of “New Age” and “secular humanist.” I’m not sure what this ads to an evaluation of the decline of government education in the United States. Even if one wished to identify “secular humanism” as the key philosophical influence behind all the myriad counterproductive decisions made in our government educational systems - sure, it can be argued - I don’t see how throwing “New Age” on top strengthens the argument.
