Civil rights activist pleads no contest
Marsha Joyner’s theft nearly imperiled a condo’s occupants

CORRECTION

Saturday, March 13, 2003>> Civil rights activist Marsha Joyner, convicted of second-degree theft, is no longer president of the Martin Luther King Coalition-Hawaii as was incorrectly reported yesterday in a Page A7 article.

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin strives to make its news report fair and accurate. If you have a question or comment about news coverage, call Editor Frank Bridgewater at 529-4791 or email him at fbridgewater@starbulletin.com.

Longtime civil rights activist Marsha Joyner tearfully apologized yesterday for stealing $14,700 from her condominium association, saying there was no excuse for what she did. Joyner, a former president of the Kon Tiki ‘Ano Hou, a 48-unit building in Waikiki, pleaded no contest in September to second-degree theft.

She was accused of signing association checks without the board’s approval to a company owned by resident manager Grant Ricky Peters and to a company she owned for work that was not performed. Peters, who was also indicted for second-degree theft, has not been found.

Circuit Judge Richard Perkins, after hearing her apology yesterday, said he believed she is sincerely remorseful, and granted Joyner’s request to defer her no-contest plea for five years if she abides by court-imposed conditions. He also ordered her to perform 350 hours of community service.

Joyner, president of the Martin Luther King Coalition-Hawaii and one of four presidential electors chosen by the state Democratic Party in 1996, admitted yesterday she took money that belonged to the association 22 times during a low point in her life. “I’m very ashamed. I am deeply sorry for what I’ve done,” she said.

some snippets for your reading pleasure!

Marsha Joyner, 65, president of the Dr. Martin Luther King Day Coalition of Hawaii and high-ranking member of Hawaii’s Democrat Party, pled no-contest to second-degree theft charges, Sept. 8, for embezzling several thousand dollars from elderly tenants....

Henry, who resides much of the year in San Francisco, put up his own money to save the residents’ homes until the stolen money was repaid through the insurance claim. He also filed a complaint with the Honolulu Police Department and made over 100 calls and visits at his own expense to ensure the police department followed up on the theft. Henry was motivated by a comment made to him by Joyner, -—>who he says claimed she had too many high placed connections in Hawaii and was too politically powerful to be charged for the theft. <-——

The Honolulu Advertiser and The Honolulu Star-Bulletin with all of the documentation on the case. Both papers essentially ignored the story, and The Honolulu Advertiser topped that by endorsing Joyner over Slom in the 2000 Senate election, even with the knowledge she was under investigation for a felony.

Joyner introduces herself by saying she is a WITCH who “belongs to an extinct culture of matriarchal rule.” She also talks about the “seething revolt of men” and how in the 4th century, men “killed more than 4 million women who were healers, midwives and practitioners of earth centered or nature tied religious rituals and branded them ‘Witches,’” burning them at the stake. She blames the ills of society on a world she says is “dominated by men:
