You’re right, Barney did an outstanding job. In fact, he should have conducted the interview. The question is: How did that teeny-bopper get such an important assignment? I should have mentioned Varney’s great work in the piece.
As I’m typing this, O’Reilly is interviewing the cheerleader who nearly climbed on Obama’s lap! Are they nuts?!?!

Most likely a condition of the interview being granted to Fox News was that Obama's campaign got to pick the interviewer.
Fox News probably had to grant the interview request regardless of the fact that the conditions imposed by the campaign compromised the reputation of the studio because under scrutiny the conditions would be considered reasonable. And if Fox is going to have McCain on their network for an interview, then they need to give Obama a chance too.
Negotiations with the Obama campaign probably started with the Obama campaign asking if they can pick anybody to do the interview. Fox News would've said no, as that would be unreasonable. The final compromise being that Obama's campaign could select anybody from the Fox News reporting staff.
Obama has been running around saying McCain's drilling won't make even a dent for ten years, but he's talking about reducing our dependence by half in 22 years. O'Rielly did a decent job of ridiculing that, and of course, Sis-Boom-Ba-Alexis made it a point to defend He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Middle-Named's plan all over again: "well to be fair blah blah blah."
Did you notice also, Miss Fair and Balanced referred to McCain's "plan" but Obama's "solution?" I laughed out loud.
