I suppose you can't fault a candidate for not volunteering for the military, particularly in the late 1970s when Obama came of military age.
However, I do think it is important to know whether a male candidate for Commander-in-Chief registered for the draft. I remember doing it in 1981. Obama should have in 1979. I wonder if he did, given his foreign upbringing and foreign/lefty background.
Anyone know how to check this? The Selective Service website required birthdate and social security number.
Had to register in 75.
President Ford halted registration in March 1975. President Carter reinstated the requirement in July 1980 which had a retroactive component that would have cover Obama and mandating his registration. I don’t know if he did or not but he had the requirement to do so.
Carter reinstated the selective service during his term.
and don't I remember Barak Millhouse only being 45?
My son just got his notice this week. So you have to notify them if you move? What is up with that?
Valid question.
When Obama turned 18, they weren’t registering for Selective Service. Carter re-instated selective service, and made it retroactive for those who were born starting in January of 1960, which included Obama.
They scheduled periods for people to register who had passed their 18th birthday, and it would have been in 1981.
I was in that small group who never had to register.
Me too.
” Im not a morning person, I think independently, and I hate being yelled at.”
From those of us that like mornings, Can’t think for ourselves, and enjoy a yelling at. Your welcome.
Someone asked the same question on FR a few months ago.
Apparently, no one has verified it one way or another.
My gut feeling is that he did NOT register when he should have, and still hasn’t to this day, but if called on it, could have some Obama supporter working close enough to the Selective Service office to plant some false documents.
I remember hearing about someone 30 years ago, friend of a friend, who knew someone who never got the necessry bach. degree, but had a friend working in the records area in a college in Chicago to plant false records-
so that they could be looked up, confirmed and sent out to the schools he’d applied to as a teacher. The friend was paid handsomely for it.
No one as of yet seems to have put the question to him, point-blank, about registering for the Selective Service.
It wouldn’t sink him but it might lose him enough votes
to put the final nails in his coffin as a Presidential candidate,or President. If he indeed didn’t register,I’d like to hear his explanation, along with not putting his hand over his heart onstage there with Hillary and Richardson et.al. during the StarSpangled Banner; for both,. could he get away with “I didn’t really know you had to do that”.??? Shouldn’t a potential President know you had to or atleast should do both things? It’s not at all hard to come up with an example a day of how insulated and
out of touch this guy is from traditional American life.
He’s been living in a nice comfortable little bubble, aided and abetted by all the supporters he’s been so careful to flatter in the ongoing orgy of self-congratulation that is his campaign, and that bubble is going to burst sooner rather than later.
I'd say something, but I'm just a mind-numbed military robot, incapable of independent thought. LOL.
Lots of states automatically register males when they get their drivers license or register to vote.
Anyone know what the drill is in Illinois?
An FYI for those on the list. And if you’re already on the thread, sorry. I’ll not make this a habbit of pinging to non-satirical threads.
If he received any student aid, loans, scholarships, he would have had to register. You have so show proof of SS registration in order to receive these.
That is correct. Excellent point.
No problem. It’s an interesting question.
I have a hunch the Demonrats would fight that all the way to the Supreme Court. They might argue (perhaps successfully) that that provision only applies to Civil Service hires—i.e. bureaucrats, not politicians.
Now that left a mark. <];)
I think this is an interesting question, and should probably be followed up. My guess is that there is a good chance he didn't register. I remember those days, and given his political tendencies, he may have protested by not registering.
FYI, Obama did not move to Chicago until 1985. In 1980, he would have been either in Los Angeles, where he was attending Occidental College, or back home in Hawaii.
