I'm buying a new car tomorrow and writing a check for cash. I told a co-worker that I was doing it and he said "the dealer won't take that personal check".
My question which is only valid in the next 16 hours or so..is that true? Can't the dealer hold the money against me or something?
Call. It’s that simple.
Get the total price of the car, get a bank check, and drive away.
Way car sales are right now, the dealer will drive you down to the bank himself.
But when you promise, you have to REALLY mean it.
The dealer will accept your personal check, but you probably won’t take delivery until it clears. For delivery of new cars it’s more normal to bring a certified check for the balance, but every dealer is entitled to do business however they like.
Write the check to the dealer. Not cash. If they won’t accept the check for the purchase price, have them call and deal with your bank.
Take the check, go to a gun store, buy a FN/FAL and some ammunition, go to the car dealer, and drive away for a fraction of what you might have otherwised paid.
Ask them the final amount and get a certified or a cashier’s check for it at the bank. They might put a personal check on hold and you wouldn’t get the car immediately. Just my $0.02.
My advise is don’t buy new. You’re wasting your money.
I expected your input on this thread.
;-)
Oh, and congratulations! ;-)
I sold cars for ten years, we took personal checks all the time. If it bounces and you don’t make good, you can be charged with Grand Theft Auto.
They’ll want to know that you’re who you say you are.
Buy from that guy in Texas that was giving out free pistols. Or at least bargin till this guy gives you one.
Sticker minus 17%. Tell them they have 5 minutes. Walk at 5 minutes.
Don’t be silly. Of course they’ll take a check. I bought my last car that way. Spoke to them ahead, walked in, they gave me the bill and total, I wrote them a check, they checked with the bank, I drove away in the car.
If they don’t want to take your check, there’s a millon other car dealers on the the next block that will only be too happy to oblige you money and bank. If they don’t want to take your check, tell the to PO.
It’s not like there’s a shortage or cars or dealers out there right now. They’ll kiss you butt to sell you a car.
Heck, Cal Worthington would eat a bug to sell you a car.
Thank you very much.
Sheeyit. The dealer will have those funds electronically transferred before you get out of the parking lot.
At least put it on a credit card so you get 2% back or airline miles or something!
For the record, I think the dealer will get his money from your bank account before you can get out of the lot.
