Why My Mother May Not Vote for Obama

If Obama is going to win the general election, he is going to need Hillary's supporters.

I spoke to my mother this weekend. She rarely ever votes Republican except for George Pataki. Her job is in mental health which is largely financed by Medicaid, not exactly a job that would want to vote for someone who detests "socialized medicine". I asked her what she thought of Obama. She had a one word reply, "a$$h*le".

A$$h*le? Why mom? She told me that his campaign tries to take everything Hillary says out of context. I asked her to cite an example, she stated the RFK quote. Stating a historical event is not in the words of the Obama campaign "unfortunate". The point she was trying to make was that Hillary has every right to stay in until Obama wraps up the nomination because as of now he hasn't. She also didn't like when Hillary cited an AP poll that showed she does better with white working class voters, the Obama campaign was upset. When Tim Russert cites the same poll, he is informative but when Hillary states it she's racist?

Then my mother stated the unthinkable, "If McCain picks someone like Bloomberg as a VP, I'll vote for McCain." I told her that this would never happen, yet the Obama campaign needs to be cognizant of the fact that Hillary supporters are sensitive. They don't like being told it is over when it technically it isn't. If the Obama campaign truly believes it is over, their campaign should issue the phrase "no comment" every time they are asked about Hillary.

Obama has another problem too, his supporters. Here is what one person posted on Ashish's blog:

"This b*tch needs to change her tampon because its clearly made her toxic. I already hated her, but looked the other way. this comment is completely uncalled for and can only lead to more problems for the democratic party."

Comments like these leads to more problems for the Democratic Party. Nobody treated Mike Huckabee like this when his odds were even steeper. Nobody blamed Mike Huckabee for destroying the Republican Party. Nobody called Mike Huckabee nasty names.

Hillary is staying in the race because she thinks she has a better chance to win than Obama. Based on current polling she is correct. Hillary is able to win states like Arkansas, West Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Nevada and Missoui, all states that Obama is trailing McCain in.

My point to Obama and his followers is to save your venom for McCain because if you want to beat him, then you are going to need Hillary's supporters on your side in the Fall. Having Hillary stay in the race has allowed Obama to pass McCain in the polls in states like Ohio and Pennsylvania where he was originally trailing McCain.

I can agree on that.

I was sitting in the beauty salon two weeks ago, and I overheard one of the young girls working there talking about politics. She obviously was a Democrat, but stated clearly that she would be voting for McCain because she couldn’t bring herself to vote for someone whose middle name was Hussein, and she didn’t believe this was a good time to elect a female President.

Never apologize for them.
Never appease them.
Never forget.
