A big part of what hurt the noirish look of films from that era was the introduction of the wide screen movies starting with “The Robe” in 1953. A little tough to have film noir on the wide screen. There was another great flick from that era which felt very claustrophobic. It was about a women’s prison. I can’t remember the name of the movie.
