Minor point.... the over and incorrect use of 'affect', instead of the proper and under used, 'effect'. Willie should know better as a (cough) 'professional writer'.

Especially since Willie's screed is about voting, which does directly have an Effect on their lives.

Effect:
1) Something brought about by a cause or agent; a result
2) The power to produce an outcome or achieve a result; influence: The drug had an immediate effect on the pain. The government's action had no effect on the trade imbalance.

Now if the act of Voting doesn't fit the above, nothing does.

Again, minor point. I just don't think I've seen 'effect' in a news article is eons. It's always 'affect'.
