For McCain, There’s Only One Perfect Candidate for Veep (editorial)
The Rothenberg Politcal Report ^ | May 1, 2008 | Stuart Rothenberg

Posted on 05/03/2008 8:16:56 AM PDT by Clintonfatigued

We all hear the same names mentioned as prospective running mates for John McCain: former Office of Management and Budget Director and one-time U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and even former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge.

Each one would bring something to the ticket. Some come from crucial swing states that could help McCain reach 270 electoral votes. A number are governors, adding a non- Washington, D.C., piece to the ticket. By most standards, all are good-looking and articulate.

And yet, none of them would change the partisan political equation in the fall election, and I’m not at all sure any of them would increase McCain’s chances of winning in the fall. Certainly none of them would constitute a statement by McCain about his presidency, the kind of statement that would send a message to voters.

There is, however, somebody who would fill that bill and therefore be a near-perfect pick for McCain: Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman.

Thanks. Yeah, it was a LOT more conservative when I signed up. Must be the mccain factor and the redefining of the term “conservative” that has permeated every corner of our existence.

Sort of like “cut off the hand to save the arm”.

> “I think this is where the GOP wants to take the party.” <

Which is exactly what mccain has been working toward for years while herding the sheeple into the proper formation to leap over the cliff!

“cut off the hand to save the arm”.

Good analogy and spot on!

Romney was a governor and CEO. He may or may not be many things. He was an executive.

What are Pawlenty’s conservative credentials? Just asking.

You can “call” him whatever you like, but the fact is that he was one of the worst RINO destructive farces serving as a “Governor” of the past 25 years (with only his mentor Weld and Christie Whitman being a few degrees worse). If that sleazy, lying, liberal cretin who finished the job of killing and burying the MA GOP is on the ticket with McCain, you can bet the farm I’ll cast a vote for the real deal. McCain is bad enough to take, but with that tag team effort, there will be no national Republican party left to oppose the rodents in 4 years. Not even Hillobama could accomplish that feat.

Well you kind of have a point there, but compared to Lieberman, Romney and Rudy, at least he’s solidly Pro Life and supports Second Amendment rights. Rob Portman is the best, but it would shock me if the GOP went with a true Conservative as a running mate.

My pick for President was Duncan Hunter, who I didn’t get a chance to vote for since the RI primary was after he dropped out. The dream ticket would have been Hunter/Portman with Tom Tancredo heading up Homeland Security.

Better yet, Tom Tancredo heading up Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
