My Dad My Hero

My father is a Korean War Vet and a retired policeman. I'm sure many of you feel your father's are amazing but I believe that mine is truly amazing and that's why I nominated him for Mr. Mom for mother's day. You see in addition to working a highly stressful job, in a metropolitan city that saw riots in the sixties and often recognized for being the murder capital of the United States.

A friend of mine saw a contest which would allow you to name your recognize your father for mother's day and passed this on to me. You see this really fit because for years my father took on the role of mother also.

I am the oldest of eight kids and I can tell you that this certainly was no easy job. I also know that the media often makes a father's role seem to be so unimportant that we are assured that we can do without one in the house. Unlike the bumbling Dad's or men you are treated to on television commercials or TV shows my Dad stepped up to the plate in short order to make sure that we could have a normal childhood.

This certainly wasn't easy. I know I wasn't always the easiest teen to deal with but with age and life experience I truly appreciate what he has done with more and more clarity.

That's where this contest came in. I had to write in a hundred words or less or something like that why my Dad should be recognized as a great mom. At first I put it off because there was no way I could possibly talk about all that my father has been and done for me. Finally I put down a synopsis of what he did and sent it in.

I just found out the other day that my essay was listed as a finalist. This is amazing and trust me when I let my father know he was so touched. Who says real men don't cry because we both did. Now comes the hard part. My dad is now a finalist and he could actually win a vacation.

Now this might not seem like much but let me tell you my Dad has never had a boys night out, no fishing, hunting, golfing vacations for him. His "vacation time" involved taking us to museums, parks, and helping us make lasting childhood memories. Even as we grew up and moved away Dad spent his time with our kids being a great grandfather to them all. This vacation would be something he never would have done for himself even if he could have afforded it. He's the kind of guy that when I offer to take him to dinner he tells me to save my money because I might need it one day. (Guess that's where I got my thriftiness)

Anyway, in order to win, I have to get people to vote for him. The contest is sponsored by 1-800-flowers so this is a legitimate contest. it doesn't cost you anything to vote. You won't get spam. It takes a few seconds and the only information you need to give is your name and your email address. The site is http://mothersday.ugenmedia.com You click on view finalists which is right above the picture that says green thumb mom (I suppose you can also click on Mr. Moms) My Dad is the middle one and he's the only one sitting by himself. His name is William B I believe you can still vote for him. Keep your fingers crossed. I know this can't begin to thank him for all that he did for us but I sure would love to do this for him.

Maybe what we need is a Father’s Day.

No more voting, and they aren’t allowing us to “view finalists.” Could you post your entry? I’d love to see it.
