Amazing what we can block out or just plain don’t remember! I had completely forgotten that walker until I saw your pic, and I don’t really remember it. My mom has a pic of me in front of a big bed of peonies and standing behind mine in just about the same position you’re standing in. My earliest memory is before I was 3, and the only reason I can pinpoint it to then is because we moved from city to farm when I was 3. My grandma told me to stand still while she unlocked the apartment door and NOT to climb the fire escape stairs. I can vividly see those black metal stairs and remember turning around to see gma huffing and puffing up three flight to retrieve me. Just that one glimpse of memory, and I’m assuming she blistered my butt when she caught me! LOL
I told her she should be glad that I may only have half the genes that my Great Aunt Dell had for growing things.
Dell's place had more bees and other insects than I can remember at any other place. I tried to describe to my wife what the place looked like. A homestead ... dirt road ... flowers and what I thought were weeds every where. And everything that anyone could grow in the garden.
I never knew there were pictures of the place. When she showed me the slide of Dell holding the crate of strawberries, I said that is Dell in her garden! She said there are more pictures. So I decided to post them.
So now you know why I have 3 fig trees and the three pear trees that I never thought I would have and a garden 4 times the size as last year and a watermelon patch! And every time I see something I would like to grow I wish my garden was bigger!
Gardening is either in your blood or it isn’t. You can always tell because the people who lean that way can’t stand it when the soil starts warming up and smelling good—they are compelled to plant! Guess it goes back to Cain and Abel, although my family has leanings toward animals and earth. :)
Glad you finally got to garden! Thanks for posting your pics! Brings back a lot of memories!
And now I make all the homemade bread and soups we can eat. Good stuff!
Strange! Bad Ass Marine turned gardener, cook and baker! LOL
Oh, and as for being a Bad Ass Marine, we were trained to protect the Life of the Marine next to us at all costs. That is the code. That is the secrete of the Marines. Brothers.
Do you dry your chives? I have a bunch and have heard they can be dried. What method do you use. I’m a novice.
I have always used fresh chives; however, if you wish to dry them, I would think that you could cut them, bundle them loosely, and tie them upside down in a cool, dry place.
