Kai Tak has been closed for some time now.I flew into it twice in my life and the first time I had no idea of its reputation....I (truly!) thought I was gonna die! Now I understand why they coined the phrase “Kai Tak Heart Attack”.Just part of the mystery that is Hong Kong,IMO.

I used to visit friends that lived right under the landing pattern for Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. Those planes landing overhead were so close to the homes. When one of the big AWACS came in for a landing, what conversation you had going on, whether in person or on the phone, just stopped completely, no shouting because it was useless with the noise. You just waited for a few long seconds, then continued on with your conversation as if nothing happened. No explanation or apology on why you stopped speaking was necessary, because everyone understood.

Kai Tak was interesting whether going in or out! The first time I flew out, I could see the buildings just below the plane, and I kept saying to myself —”Get higher, get higher!”. The thing is, the plane WAS getting higher, but the buildings were on a hillside so the jet was skimming them as it rose!
Landing was always an experience, too. You just went down! One time the pilot casually said, “ A right turn and we will be there in a minute or so”. (OWTTE). And it was so. He made a sharp right, and pointed the nose down, and we were in!!
Exciting!
