"Star-gazing, no doubt -- what else would one use a telescope for? To tell the truth, there are precious few stars I'd recognize anyway."

One could use a telescope for observing nature.

As for star-gazing, there are still areas where amateur or semi-professional astronomers can make contributions. You could still discover another planet!

Here's how: I was Googling "Trojan planets" for um, technical reasons, when I came across an interesting article from a small college group.

They had reasoned that some few "eclipsing binaries" -- those are stars that orbit each other, and do so such that they pass in front of each other as we observe them, (one eclipses the other) -- could possibly have an invisible companion planet that orbited at the same distance in a rotating equilateral triangle.

Logic said that such a planet would also tend to eclipse (slightly) its companion stars. By observing for a very slight diminution of light from the star being eclipsed, (or transited), at exactly the right time in the grand rotation, one could deduce the presence of a Trojan Planet hundreds of light years away!

Keep in mind that timing of observations and accuracy of light intensity measurements are at least as important as the quality of your scope, but you too could be a Lowell or Tombaugh!

Were Igor alive, he would give you a run for your money when it comes to astronomy! He had a Charter Subscription to Astronomy magazine, but he was so far advanced in that baliwick that he kept waiting for bigger and better telescopes.

His career in the aerospace industry caused him to spend MANY nights in the cold and dark, even though “I” was waiting!

In Saudi Arabia, he was King of the Compound, and saw things in the sky he could only murmur about.

I’m still in awe of what he saw....

Today’s telescopes are absolutely awesome!

For those who live in or can get to skies dark enough for star-gazing, the new scopes will align themselves, and steer themselves to observable objects of interest. In some systems, even the International Space Station.

Couple that with advances in camera and computer technology, and the sky doesn’t have to be the limit for anyone!

His dream was to get a Mead.
After his death, I had a neighbor with a Mead, and he also had an electronic clock/GPS that was an absolute marvel.
Even with the skyglow of Vegas, I was able to see ALL the rings of Saturn in awesome detail! And we were “downtown!”

Theoretically, it’s a less relatively expensive hobby these days.

Done properly, one could even mitigate some of the expense through photography or research.

Meanwhile, I think I’ll go refresh my memory of what the inside of my eyelids look like.

He got his first telescope for an astronomy class in CA.... but It was the beginning of his quest for astronomical knowledge.

If the insides of your eyelids look anything like mine, shame on you!

I just heard one of the local radio host Globull Warming followers say the recent cooling is just part of the Globull Warming cycle.

LOL!

Right, it’s that whole “Climate Change” thing. I’ve noticed that the climate in August is usually different from the climate in January ... I suppose that’s all my fault for breathing too much ...

I’ve sent Anoreth to the Food Lion. Hope she comes back in one piece with bread and milk!

I’ve been looking forward to this for months. I was at the doctor’s office with Vlad half the morning (checkup, not sick), and didn’t feel like heading out again immediately. I have to go to church at 12:30 for a meeting as it is.

Just had to give her money! She wanted to go to Wal-mart and get fried chicken, but I didn’t have that much cash. She hasn’t given me my change from the Food Lion, either ...
