I’d like to get my friend a puppy, but I don’t know what he wants. Probably something “large.” I’ll have to keep my eyes and ears open for opportunities.

Maybe a retired greyhound? They’re very well-trained and relaxed.

There’s a thought! We have a chapter of Greyhound Adoptions of America (I think that’s the name) here in Vegas, and I know they have some excellent animals! I’ll keep that in mind!
He has a large lot that is all fenced in, so the dog could run if it wanted to. I’ll have to check with them again. I had thought of adopting one years ago, but my apartment wasn’t large enough for the two of us! LOL!
He’s probably just about ready for a critter....He had a golden retriever mix, who adored him (and me) but she would run away every chance she got when his ex-wife was around.

Greyhounds seem to be an excellent pet, as long as you have room for what’s quite a large animal. They like walks, but don’t need hours of running like some hunting or herding breeds.

I was introduced to a HUGH brindle greyhound, and I fell in love with him. If I had had the room, he would have been mine. He was a rescue, and I was impressed with his color, his size and his gentleness.
I suspect I’ll check that out...my friend is having a birthday in a couple of months, and that would be such a good gift for him!

Glad I thought of something useful!
My mother is going to Las Vegas next weekend with some friends, and other friends (from the Navy) are going to stay with Dad, take him to the country club, play golf, and so on. She’s looking at getting a home-care aide for other times when she wants to go somewhere. She said the ones with the employment agency work 4-hour shifts, so she could get someone from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. to make sure Dad ate, took his medicine, turned everything off, locked up, and so on. Then he could go to bed and be fine until morning.

It sounds like your mother is doing what she needs to do in order to care for your dad like he needs. (If that makes sense...)
I’ll wave at her as she flies over, since we’re right in the flight path for McCarran! LOL! Coming or going!
Does your dad have a “med-alert” (bracelet or necklace) for those times he’s alone? That would be a good investment, if he’s alone in the evenings, even once in a while.
Your mother should be able to get the information from the 2008 Medicare book.

Is “Med-Alert” the device that signals a security company? He doesn’t have one of those, but he has a “dog-tag” with his name, address, and phone number, and the information that he’s an Alzheimer’s patient. His physical health is very good, so they’re not concerned right now about his becoming ill. He just forgets to lock the door and turn the stove off!

Yes, that would be the one. If he should fall or something, that is a life-saver, to be sure.

Well, I’ve been awake for a while, but the thread seems a little dozy.
Any suggestions?
