Huck backer/Romney hater tries to galvanize Michigan churches
politico.com ^ | 01/10/08 | Jonathan Martin

If it hasn't been written already, it will be before next Tuesday: Michigan is, in the famous words of Rich Bond, "the Beirut of Republican politics."

In a state riven by factions and ancient hatreds, Gary Glenn stands out.

He runs Michigan's American Family Association, but recently he's focused his efforts on taking down Mitt Romney.

Given the events of the past few weeks, that now translates into supporting Huck.

Romney's camp shares this email, passed along by a supporter, in which Glenn explains at considerable length how to maximize the church's for Huck and to do so without crossing legal boundaries.

It makes one key element of the Huck strategy fairly clear.

And note which churches to hit and which to avoid.

I see nothing wrong with using market research to determine where your supporters are and coming up with methods to mobilize them.

If his supporters are evangelical, then he’d be an idiot not to try to get them out in greater numbers than his opponents try to get out their supporters.

Just as a side note, I’m really surprised that Catholics are supporting Romney. He is pro-abortion and pro-gay agenda.

I’d say the word has not yet gotten to them about Romney’s record.

FRE Thompson got the endorsement of the Right to Life! Get it right and vote for life. Vote for the conservative Supreme Court Justice that Thompson will appoint!

Are you ready?

Not enough people have gotten the word that the Right to Life endorses FRED Thompson.

Vote for Fred. And spread the word.

This Catholic would NEVER and I do mean NRVER vote for Romney. He will never be the nominee!

I think a lot of the anti-Huckabee nonsense may be coming from people who have a problem with pastors and Christian broadcasters (which isn't a comment about you, JR).

Too bad for them.

The alarmist tone of this thread is silly. Christians are individualists -- afterall we know that each of us has a direct line to God in Christ. We make up our own minds, thankyouverymuch.

FRED Thompson will appoint conservative judges to the Supreme Court in the mold of

John Roberts
Antonin Scalia
Joseph Alito
Clarence Thomas.

We need Thompson as PRESIDENT!

Get it together, Catholics!

(xzins — Need I say anthing more?)

GOD HELP US INDEED ...

Gary Glenn in his righteous but misguided zeal, is helping elect a NON-conservative soft-on-crime tax-and-spend flipflop-on-immigration JimmyCarter-on-foreign-policy prolife RINO for President, and in the process will DESTROY the Reagan coalition.

There are many reasons why Huckabee is a terrible choice, perhaps the worst choice, in the nomination race:
1. Soft-on-crime Governor who went on a pardon/commutation spree
2. Pro-instate-tuition for illegal aliens and for other giveaways - his record on immigration stinks
3. Fiscal liberal Tax-and-spender as Governor
4. Dissembled about his record when challenged
5. Not a conservative, hurt conservatives in Ark.
6. Ethics issues, taking public money for private use
7. Flipflopper, on immigration, Cuba and other issues
8. An incompetent Jimmy Carteresque boob on foreign policy
9. Will get beaten easily by the Democrats

All that energy and for what?!? A total Clusterhuck.

thanks for nothing Gary/AFA-Michigan.

“Was his purpose to promote Huckabee or evoke a backlash?”

He’s been a Mitt-bashing freeper for months.
This kind of campaign tactics is nothing new to the Huck campaign. It’s how they won Iowa.

At least in 1996 we got a real Republican ... this is WORSE, much WORSE... a total CLUSTERHUCK.

Huckabee is the WORST candidate in the race. The social conservatives and the RINOs are between themselves ready to tear the Reagan coalition apart.

SAD SAD SAD.

“[Huckabee] has zero intellectual underpinnings in the conservative movement,” says Blant Hurt, a former part owner of, and columnist for, Arkansas Business magazine. “He’s hostile to free trade, hiked sales and grocery taxes, backed sales taxes on Internet purchases, and presided over state spending going up more than twice the inflation rate.”

Randy Minton, chairman of the Arkansas chapter of Phyllis Schlafly’s national Eagle Forum, said, “We called him a pro-life, pro-gun liberal, when I was in the state legislature and he was governor.” Phyllis Schlafly herself was even more direct.

President and Founder of Eagle Forum, Phyllis Schlafly, said this about Governor Huckabee: “He destroyed the conservative movement in Arkansas, and left the Republican Party a shambles.”

“I think a lot of the anti-Huckabee nonsense”

Is that what you call the schooling Thompson gave Huckabee tonight?

This has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with the fact that Huckabee is NOT a conservative.

Bill Clinton + Jimmuh Carter + Pat Robertson + Barack Obama + Gomer Pyle = Mike Huckabee

That's almost a definition of an independent, "loose cannon," dear WOSG.

Schooling? Hardly.

BTW the ultimate in George Bush's arrogance is in pressuring Israel to give up land for piss-I-mean-"peace." That is an insane policy that Fred Tompson agrees with.

Huckabee is right.

I’ll agree with you that Thompson was more animated than I have seen him in the entire campaign, which is a good thing.

That said, I was disappointed in him. Here’s why:

Fred Thompson, IMO, has always projected the aura of “Elder-Statesman” (Think Ben Franklin, or any other person of “perceived authority”).

Last night, he came across as weak. Not a weak attack mind you, but because he feels the need to tear down his competitor, in this case Huckabee, he is saying “The only way for me to win is to make Huckabee weaker”. By the end of the debate, it was becoming old, because he was interjecting Huckabee criticism when he should have been talking about his own position. If he had stopped after the first couple of Huckabee attacks, he would have been much better, and left Huckabee worse.

He did himself no favors, enthuse to cheer the people that were supporting him anyway.

That’s my opinion; yours differs obviously.

I'm surprised that any devout Christians are supporting anyone but Hunter or Thompson.

I’d say the word has not yet gotten to them about Romney’s record.

This is always the problem.

I think it is also worth noting that devout Catholics are not supporting Rudy and that you don't hear cries of "Catholic bashing" when Rudy is criticized -- this is an interesting contrast to Romney and the Mormons.

My comment was in the context of the article. You already know that I consider pro-life Catholics strong allies. (I’m not real open to considering any anti-life Christian as being a real Christian.)

My guess about Michigan Catholics supporting pro-abortion Romney is that the Michigan Romney Machine has slowed the broadcasting of Willard’s real record.

Despite any minor differences we might have, I have NEVER questioned your genuine love for Catholics and your desire for Christian unity. I was just trying to point out how Catholics don't feel any "Catholic loyalty" to Rudy.

I’m not real open to considering any anti-life Christian as being a real Christian.

I agree, I am unable to comprehend how someone can reconcile themselves to the belief that one can be a true Christian or Jew and support the indiscriminate taking of innocent human life.
