Duncan Hunter is still trying to push the Sea Fighter. You know, X-Craft, that beacon of hope for those who hold out for major Navy transformation. Duncan Hunter is under the assumption that if the Navy would just field the Sea Fighter with 500 missiles from a certain company who continues to get earmarks from Mr. Hunter, a company that donates a lot of money to his political campaign, the US would have a better Navy...Duncan Hunter's fleet of one is in Florida and he isn't too happy about it. This is the second year in a row Duncan Hunter has tried this trick, and last year the Navy did nothing to move the process along to Duncan Hunter's liking. The difference, in 2007 the House actually put $22 million in the budget which "authorized and appropriated $23 million for the Navy to begin the process of upgrading Sea Fighter so it can be operationally deployable -- through steps including adding offensive and defensive weapons and improving ship survivability systems." This year Congress didn't include any money, that probably has something to do with a certain 2006 election. Maybe L3 needs to give more political donations to Democrats...

Everyone considers Hunter pro-Defense, but naval personell don't seem to like him too much, because of things like this. Sea Fighter is a radical, but lightly armed ship that probably wouldn't be survivable against first class threats. However, some of the contractors are in Hunter's district, and he's trying to pressure the Navy to buy more of them.

http://science.howstuffworks.com/sea-fighter.htm Hmmm a littoral fighting ship that can operate in the confined waters...oh like the Persian Gulf.. while the bulk of the current navy have to stand off in the Indian Ocean because they cannot be risked inside the envelope of land based anti ship missiles.
Seems the Admirals are determined to ignore everything that has happened in the world since 1991 and maintain a deep blue water navy in-case the Russian bear magically resurrects itself.
I guess I will side with combat vet Hunter against the Pentagon puzzle palace on this one.

The Navy has a littoral capability today and will continue to improve on it through the next decade. We wouldn't have our current littoral assets if CNO didn't have their thinking caps on in the late-80s.
Thanks, Duncan, but I'll let the CNO/ONR guys do the driving. There's a lot more at stake than meets the eye.

Naval folks are, in my experience the least conservative of the five services. When the Pentagon hosts their first Gay Pride Day celebrations, they’ll no doubt have a full house of Annapolis alumni.

LOL, for supposedly being a non factor in this election, I find it amusing how you people do your darndest to go after Hunter. And if Hunter supports this it is for more than donations. A combat vet like Hunter with a son who is called up for combat duty is always going to look for ways to have the best military. You have not shown otherwise.

Combat Vet Hunter wouldn’t know an anchor from a rat’s ass. I think I’ll trust sailors on this one.

And what ships are we going to use to secure shipping lanes around Indonesia the horn of Africa etc?
We don't need Arleigh Burkes for everything and can't affound another 50 billion-dollar ships.
However small, multi-purpose, ships that work for light missionsa dn the Coast Guard have a value.
