Uh oh ... spaghetti oh!

Just days after al Qaeda's last stronghold in Iraq fell to the coalition ... Iraq has offered a deal to the US to stay in Iraq for the long haul.

Fox News:

Iraq's government, seeking protection against foreign threats and internal coups, will offer the U.S. a long-term troop presence in Iraq in return for U.S. security guarantees as part of a strategic partnership, two Iraqi officials said Monday.

Is the US going to subsidize Iraq’s national defense like the US subsidized European country national defenses?

Although not widely publicized, the announcement proves the FReeper Bert to be prescient. He forsaw the call in early 2003 and noted in several posts at the time.

And we'll take payment for those services in barrels of sweet, light crude.

Thanks so much.

The Iraqi government is asking us to perform a service for them. To whit, guaranteeing Iraqi security against any foreign enemy, ie. Iran. It's going to be very, very expensive to house, feed, and support all those troops halfway around the world.

Therefore I propose that the Iraqi government pay for this service in barrels of crude oil.

Seems fair to me.

Well, OK.

However, although I am a member of the coalition, I don't have Maliki's ear. I can't claim any credit for the making of this deal. You might want to talk to...oh, I don't know...Condi Rice? General Petraeus?

I am delighted about it, though. I see progress after a long, hard fight.

I'll let the cynics focus on the other bits for now. I'm too busy exulting in all of the positive developments to let the media, Democrats, cynics or anybody else rain on it. :-D

I'm not raining on this parade. This is indeed excellent news and there's no way for the Dims to spin it otherwise.

If we can work this thing out, we get a base in the ME and Iran remains surrounded for the forseeable future. These are both very good things.

You should be very proud of all the hard work you've done.

Iraq Seeks Long-Term U.S. Troop Presence

Bush Signs Deal; Bilateral Negotiations Start Next Year

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- President Bush on Monday signed a deal setting the foundation for a potential long-term U.S. troop presence in Iraq, with details to be negotiated over matters that have defined the war debate at home -- how many U.S. forces will stay in the country, and for how long.

The agreement between Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki confirms that the United States and Iraq will hash out an "enduring" relationship in military, economic and political terms. Details of that relationship will be negotiated in 2008, with a completion goal of July, when the U.S. intends to finish withdrawing the five combat brigades sent in 2007 as part of the troop buildup that has helped curb sectarian violence.

"What U.S. troops are doing, how many troops are required to do that, are bases required, which partners will join them - all these things are on the negotiating table," said Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute, President Bush's adviser on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
