Today In History: Judicial Power (Little Rock 50 years ago today)

Federal District Judge Ronald Davies (imported from North Dakota to rule on integration in Little Rock) ordered integration of Little Rock Central High School to proceeed on Setpember 3rd.

The next morning, nine black students attempted to enter the Little Rock Central High School but were turned away by the National Guard troops there. As Governor Faubus had expected, a large pro-segregation crowd stood outside the school and they jeered as the students were rebuffed.

Eight of the nine students were in a group led by Arkansas NAACP president Daisy Bates.

One student, Elizabeth Eckford, whom Bates could not reach to join her group, tried to enter separate from the other eight students.

Her taunting by the mob of pro-segregation people was the image of the day that was spread around the world.

News photographers brought the story to newspaper readers and television viewers across the country and trucks from the major television networks descended on Little Rock to provide live reports.

Little Rock Mayor Woodrow Mann denounced Faubus's fear of violence but Faubus felt use of the National Guard to prevent integration was needed to prevent violence from breaking out.

Faubus and the federal court were now in a standoff that would draw world wide attention.

Is this the event that Bubba claims he was a part of even though he lived in Hope at the time?

If memory serves, he and Hillary lead the march to the school just before they went to a Yankee’s game. Algore missed it all because he was busy inventing the Internet.
