What part of this is incorrect?
Sen. Thompson, in committee consideration of S.1664 protected businesses from having to pay higher fines when they are caught hiring illegal aliens. Under the idea that current fines were not enough of a deterrent against businesses cutting their labor costs by hiring illegal aliens, the Senate immigration subcommittee approved higher fines. Various study commissions have found that the willingness of U.S. businesses to hire illegal aliens is the No. 1 incentive for foreign workers to become illegal aliens here. But Sen. Thompson voted with a 10-8 majority in the Judiciary Committee to remove the higher fines from the 1996 legislation against illegal immigration. Numbers USA
And do you have any other information on the competing amendment?

Sorry, I was actually getting that confused with S1556 doing that from memory... (S1556 was the bill that NumberUSA says Thompson voted for when he actually opposed: http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=105&session=1&vote=00265)
NumbersUSA fails to properly put S1664 into context because they have several Senators are listed as voting for S1664, however, S1664 never made it to a vote, it was killed in committee: ( http://www.vote-smart.org/issue_keyvote_detail.php?cs_id=V907&can_id=53292 )- again, they take a procedural vote to move a bill from one committee to another committee and label that as supporting the bill.
NumbersUSA has long been looked at as not a credible source on votes, they pick and choose votes to fit their agenda and often misrepresent people's positions.
Before you continue to trust NumbersUSA, you may want to read some of their papers like this: http://www.numbersusa.com/PDFs/Retreat2.pdf (note, this is from NumbersUSA and is authored by the head of NumbersUSA- you won't like this.)
The head of NumbersUSA is in bed with Leon Kolankiewicz’s Environmental Population Stabilization movement, which wants to save the world by reducing the USA to a negative population growth (by ending all immigration and promoting abortion)
It isn't just Thompson they misrepresent, they misrepresent pretty much everyone's vote.. hell, they gave Al Gore (a friend of the head of NumbersUSA- Beck) an A+ on immigration.
