Duncan Hunter presents Republican voters with a certified dilemma. On the one hand, like many other second tier candidates, he lacks the money and national recognition to win the Republican nomination. On the other hand, his experience, knowledge, ability to precisely identify solutions, communications skills across party lines and his steadfast adherence to principles make him a formidable foe for any Democrat, if he could only win the nomination.
Congressman Hunter served with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam, attended law school and became a congressman in 1980. His record in congress is enviable and his leadership is strong.
Given the current state of international affairs, he has 4 areas of expertise that are vital:
His knowledge of the military and defense is without challenge. He knows what he is talking about, has insights few others have and has a firm grasp on what it takes to move us forward in the war in which we are engaged.
His knowledge of International Affairs is powerful and broad. Hunter was issuing information and warnings about a critical mass of trouble with China (a subject blogged extensively by Four Inch Heels of late) before most people were aware that problems existed. He recognizes that the dividend of strength is peace, not the other way around.
Hes rock solid on border security. Few of us could argue that a Hunter Administration would make great strides to secure the border and bring sanity to immigration issues.
Hes an economic conservative, careful to balance the needs of economic growth with the concerns of the American worker. We are at war and we need a strong economy to keep an army in the field and well equipped, but we also have to make sure that Americans can feed their families.
Duncan Hunter is a man who is a perfect fit for working to solve the problems we are experiencing in the world today. More importantly for political analysis, he can speak to groups across party lines. His first congressional victory was in a district that had a 2 to 1 Democrat majority. Given the chance, Hunter can unite people behind the ideas that America can appreciate: liberty, security, prosperity and hope.
Here is where I make my strongest distinction with regard to Duncan Hunter. Readers who have followed my posts on the Straw Polls will note that Ive said that voting for a sure loser is a waste.
But if a voter were to remove emotion, polling data and probabilities, focus on the task at hand (winning the war and preventing global proliferation of nuclear weapons in the hands of terrorist regimes) and pick the candidate best suited to bring us to a successful conclusion, that voter would likely select Duncan Hunter.
Where Duncan Hunter is concerned, a vote is a Spartan acknowledgement of principle, and a voter who casts a ballot for Hunter can be forgiven for embracing hope and optimism. If he were to emerge Sunday morning in a strong position in the Republican primary, America would be better off than it was the day before. Thats a powerful reason to cast a ballot for a guy many dont give a chance.

Or until the money runs out.
Judging by the number of new supporters he’s getting in the blogosphere, that won’t happen.
I’ll be at the Straw Poll this Saturday and look forward to seeing and voting for Duncan Hunter.
*applause*
Hopefully, some of the others will be dropping out soon.
Bump!! for Duncan Hunter!!
Romney is the only one of the so-called first tier candidates who is even in the same league as Duncan Hunter on perhaps two of the four areas mentioned (economy, border security). Guilani and McCain might come close on the economy but fail miserably on border security.
And on mushy middle soccer mom issues (great hair), Hunter is even competitive with Romney. He's also been married to the same woman.
DUNCAN HUNTER won’t get help from the lib party leaders, the MSM, or the RINOs. They’ve got other plans.
It’s really up to grassroots Republicans to spread the word about Hunter now, and send a check-whatever you can.
He has great postcards that are easy to distribute, too.
People who hear about Hunter love him.(EXCEPT LIBS, OF COURSE)

It's great to see your support for your candidate, it's admirable. However, THIS dynamic has not changed over the last 3-4 months, and has only gotten worse. Until that changes, and the only way I see that happening is if the top tier, get hit by a bus, or lightning, Duncan will remain in the cellar.
Solid conservative that he is, not Reganesque in any way shape or form(a good thing IMHO), Duncan is in the House, and a long, long shot at best. His noteriety is limited to very few areas outside his district. The most importnat aspect is he has not made the splash needed to get into the limelight.
A lot of people like him, myself included, but we need to look at what it will take to win the White House, and that is broad appeal across the conservatives and the 20% of undecideds. He will make an excellent VP choice on a Fred Thompson ticket.

Mitt sounds good. Unfortunately for him, there is enough video out there showing his liberal past that he will flounder.
Speaking as a soccer mom, hair is not a factor in my opinions :)
DUNCAN UNTER will make an admirable president.
He should not play second fiddle to movie actors with no military experience.
He won’t
And as for playing second fiddle, where best to get national exposure needed to make his own run than as VP? His chance to be Prez are essentially zero.
Duncan is using up a lot of cash in Iowa, but when the top candidates are not going to participate, he SHOULD do well, and I suspect even Ron Paul should do well. The Iowa straw poll will only determine where the leaders of the 2nd tier of candidates stand with each other, it doesn't reflect the reality of their position.
Even though from California, Duncan being a Southern Baptist should help him here in the south.
