WSJ editor: What will become of my well-manicured lawn if these nativist monsters have their way?

Hotels and restaurants in places like Chicago, Miami and just about every other city would have to shut down without waiters, maids and others with dubious credentials. The well-manicured lawns in my home town would soon become weed gardens in the absence of the Mexicans who man landscape services. Americans genuinely worry about maintaining the rule of law, but the biggest threat to that is the disrespect for law created when legislative grandstanders pass draconian measures that the authorities are incapable of enforcing… Washington efforts to reform Simpson-Mazzoli are plagued by the death struggle the two parties are conducting over control of the government. Republicans, who perhaps have noticed that they are losing that struggle, are frozen in the headlights of the anti-immigrant campaigns being conducted by nativists and vigilantes in their home states. Hate and emotion do not produce good laws.

You can always expect a reasonable point of view from the Wall Street Journal.

Guess folks will just have to learn to get by.

Well-manicured lawns are highly indicitive of mental illness, usually neurosis.

I live in the sticks so I don’t know anything about “needing” an illegal alien. It’s really starting to sound like more of an addiction than anything.

I think I'll be able to live through the adjustment period.

The usual b.s. People who can’t or won’t take care of their own lawns will find ways to adapt, and anyway it’s not like there’s any prospect of all illegals suddenly going back to where they came — at best we might begin to seriously block and discourage new arrivals, plus create serious disincentives for illegals to remain here. It’s not going to change overnight, even if we could get a good law passed and ENFORCED; there will be plenty of time to deal with any labor issues that arise. If we really do need more labor that cannot be provided by LEGAL residents and citizens we will address that issue as needed, LEGALLY and RATIONALLY.

btw, as a first-generation American whose father came here LEGALLY I am sick to death of all the smear-artists who throw the ‘nativist’ charge around. Everyone I know who detests our current situation of rampant illegality is open to reasonable immigration that is LEGAL and controlled by OUR needs and requirements, not by the incompetence and depravity of the socialist governments south of our border.

I mow my own lawn. Maybe they should try it. Good exercise.

I’ve mowed my lawn for decades too. Guess I just didn’t know it wasn’t the classy thing to do. I am thinking, though, of the time-honored tradition of hiring local kids who are saving up for college to do it. There are actually a few of them around. I know them through my church congregation. By the way, I’m a lady, low-class maybe, but a lady. I mowed because my husband gets hives from grass and it was ridiculous for him to suffer when I was raised some of the time on a farm and developed all kinds of nature’s remedies.

Exactly. That's what caught my eye about this article. There are rational reasons to want to stop illegal immigration. But this retard, Melloan, thinks it just has to be "hate" and "emotionalism".

I think it's in the process of being sold right now. Maybe the new owner will fire the editorial staff.

Can’t find someone to do a job? How about you pay more? I can’t think of a job that you can’t get done if you pay the proper amount of compensation. Oh, wait, when you’re trying to line your pockets you don’t want to obey the laws? And you’ll invoke slurs of hate and emotion?

Ok, now I get it.

I started mowing my great grandmother’s yard when I was big enough to safely push a mower. Her yard was 5 lots and took me the better part of a day. She paid me $4 for it when I was 10 years old and she paid me $4 when I mowed it for the last time when I was at least 30.

If I wasn’t there to mow it, she would mow it herself and even did it at 96 years old.
