When John Cox announced his campaign, in Mar. 2006, he said that he supports the fairtax.

I support Tommy Thompson, and he supports the fairtax. He has a better chance of winning the nomination than Hunter. Two of the last three republican presidents were governors, and Thompson was a governor almost as long as Romney and Huckabee, combined. No one has been elected president while the candidate was a U.S. rep.

James A. Garfield was elected President in 1880 while serving as a U.S. Representative. He was the only one.

His margin of victory over Winfield Scott Hancock in the popular vote remains the smallest in history in both percentage and absolute terms. He was assassinated six months after he took office.
