May I suggest one such to you? He is Niccolo Machiavelli and his treatise is Discourses On The First Ten Books Of Titus Livy, commonly shortened to The Discourses. Thanks for the reference, we will definitely take a look.

Thanks for the reference to Machiavelli. I'll read it.
As to what happened to him, I shoot 2" groups.

A very good summary of the rise and fall of Roman society.
May God save America from the same fate.

Very impressive work, NattieShea and Freeper PowerBaby! A most enjoyable and instructive read. No wonder the public school monopolists resent (and probably fear) the growing trend toward homeschooling....
Congratulations, Carry-Okie, for schooling these young ones so very well. I'd stand this paper up against anything on this subject written by a Harvard senior.... Possibly the latter's work would not measure up to this standard.
All, keep up the great work!

A couple questions:
what is virtue?;
what is morality?.

Before I read the paper I had to search out your Christmas photographs once more.
Young ladies,
This paper is a superior example of your efforts to learn about man.
You now have a solid grasp of this history. Comprehension that divulges to you how simple it is for one to manipulate, politically and otherwise, the unlearned. I have no fear that you will not use this knowledge carefully and for the good of all.
You two young ladies are the type of offspring for any parent to be be proud of. May I congratulate you both and wish the best for you.
Mom and Dad, you’re doing a fine job.

My instinct is that morality is more subjective, but according to the dictionary: virtue is moral excellence, moral is according to the rules of right conduct, and morality is conforming to the rules of right conduct.
I suppose the differnece is: virtue is morality taken to the next level.

May I suggest one such to you? He is Niccolo Machiavelli and his treatise is Discourses On The First Ten Books Of Titus Livy, commonly shortened to The Discourses. People who know him only as the author of the occasionally frightening The Prince are only hearing a minor part of his story. I plead guilty as charged. I will add this book to my ever-burgeoning pile of "stuff that just *HAS* to be read soon."
Cheers!

When they started the reading they were 11 & 12. As of now, both have taught themselves calculus.
These kids aren't geniuses; this is what we should be expecting. It isn't that hard.

It’s a start. The main branch of philosophy is Ethics. As you begin to study this branch you will find more and more discussion by the most eminent and respected minds both religious and secular and other questions will arise. There is no end, even if the modern discussion of moral relativity is set aside for the time being. Another subject of study would be the philosophy of history, dissension in which has caused much of the modern political argument.
