Abortion - Don't just hold Rudy and Mitt accountable, remember Fred
Spark it Up ^ | June 24, 2007

We are holding Rudy and Mitt to the fire about their past on abortion. Lets not forget Fred Thompson.

Abortions should be legal in all circumstances as long as the procedure is completed within the first trimester of the pregnancy. Link

A very strong statement from Fred Thompson when he was running for congress.

“Regardless of anyones opinion of Fred, this behavior is the same exact CRAP that we were subjected to by the Rudy-Bots!”

That is exactly what has been going on in my mind, too. The Rudy-bots and the Fred Thompson folks are using the same MO! I find it disgusting. The hatred for Hunter from the Rudy supporters was understandable but coming from thompson supporters is very puzzling.

If Thompson gets the nomination I hope to be able to support him. But if this continues, I may just say the hell with it. I am fed up.

Out of 40 pro life bills, he voted against pro life once. It’s not that bad of a record. as a matter of fact, it’s pretty good.

So, wait a minute. Your contention is that Duncan Hunter supporters should be free to post misinformation and baseless attacks on Fred Thompson threads without being confronted?

Notice the subject of this thread. It ain’t Duncan Hunter. Yet, here you Duncan Hunter fans are starting a huge flame war. Then you want to accuse Fred Thompson supporters of doing something wrong when they hit back?

Please explain to me where you are coming from on this.

The Thompson people I know have been VERY careful to try and be as supportive as possible of Duncan Hunter unless provoked by his supporters.

Are you being serious here or just trying to play the victim card?

In similiar fashion, Rudy Giulani made a pro-life statement in 1989 but since has been endorsed by abortionists. Are you stupid enough call Giuliani a pro-lifer?

I was unaware of that and find it fascinating. Can you point me toward a source? I'm betting he was talking like a real Catholic and hadn't decided to start talking like a Kennedy yet.

I agree with you! I love to opine on the issues but the personal attacks are not helpful. My opinions, just like everyone elses, are ours to make, right or wrong.

I’m assuming that repeated comparisons between Fred Thompson supporters and the RudyBots would be excluded from your idea of what comprises a personal attack?

Just trying to get a handle on where you’re coming from here.

You know, the thing about the whole “Fred’s really a pro-choicer” thing that really ticks me off is that most of the folks putting it out are supporting candidates like Giuliani and Romney. People backing Romney, who’s been pro-life for what, a couple of years, are going to whine about something Fred said 13 years ago? Man, what a bunch of rotten punks.

How can posting Fred Thompson’s own statements and survey answers be propoganda? It’s true that Thompson has indicated that he doesn’t remember the survey, but are we required to accept his explanation as the gospel truth? I for one find it hard to believe that his Senate campaign would not have issued a timely correction if the survey was simply a staffer error. Rob21 gave good sources for his quotes and was probably more polite than the Fred supporters he was debating. So, he should not have been banned. If we cannot post accurate quotes from the candidates on important issues then FreeRepublic is not free and you probably should ban me too.

No, I don’t think anyone should post misinformation or baseless attacks on anyone. I read the first 50 posts to this thread and left it because it was boring. I only came back later when I saw the thread was still active and read more.

In my opinion, Rob21 was showing poor judgement in his characterization of Thompson’s abortion stance. I believe Thompson when he says he is pro life. But I also question all the posters who kept going round and round with him on the same stupid comments. Just because one is making a fool of himself doesn’t mean everyone else has to rise up and match him. Both sides in that ongoing arguement lost as far as I am concerned.

I am open to voting for Thompson in the general but will support Hunter in the primaries. Many people support both, but some really do seem to have a serious problem with Hunter. And I do have unanswered doubts about Thompson. I am not going to fall all over someone until I hear why he wants to be president. Fielding softball questions from a now fawning press isn’t the same as debating the other candidates.

A Senate committee subsequently struck this pro-life prohibition from the bill. >>>

Thompson voted with the senate. The senated took out the pro-life language of the bill. Because of Fred Thompson and the rest of the Senate who voted to take out the pro- life language, Federal Employees don’t have to pay for thier abortions since their Federal health benefits would pay for it, thanks to the senate vote. Had the senate voted for the pro life portion of the bill, federal employees would have had to pay for their abortions out of pocket. Since it costs about $700 for an abortion, some lives could have been saved if the pro-life language remained in the bill.

“Romney, who’s been pro-life for what, a couple of years, are going to whine about something Fred said 13 years ago?”

Things are not so clear cut. When exactly did Thompson turn away from the positions he had during the 90’s? That remains unclear. Both of them had a pro life record while in office but there are still many questions unanswered about Thompson’s views on the subject today. I suspect that when he finally decides to share his views with the rest of us many people won’t like what they’ll hear.

Touche. That said, you are hardly a font of political wisdom if you thin Tommy’s going to win anything except the award for worst debate performance.

“I’m assuming that repeated comparisons between Fred Thompson supporters and the RudyBots would be excluded from your idea of what comprises a personal attack?”

You would assume correctly! I just see the same pattern. I do not compare Thompson to Rudy though. I would vote for Fred, I wouldn’t vote for Rudy. Fred Thompson is okay, some of his supporters tick me off. Duncan Hunter is better in my book. It’s that simple.

It’s been posted and argued a hundred times or more. You either believe his explanation or you don’t. Fred has a 100% pro life record. I believe him. Those who keep posting and re-posting this nonsense are simply trying to tear him down. Find something else to argue about.
