windows xp question.

i need some help, please.

i messed up--unplugged my pc too hastily which corrupted the software, and had to re-format my hard disk. this requires, of course, re-installing every piece of software, and my ad-aware, firefox, zone alarm, etc.

my problem is the appearance and “feel” of everything. my mouse is jumpy, and using the cursor to move down the screen is jumpy. the typefaces are different. even writing this post is problematic; the cursor jumps from line to line occasionally.

my copy of ms xp is apparently an older version of xp. for example, the desktop picture is the green fields and blue sky that i remember buying in october, 2001 when xp was just released.

i re-installed the operating system from an hp cd labelled “microsoft windows xp home edition service pack2”.

my question—where do i go to get my old “feel” xp? is it a newer version? if so, why didn’t hp pos send that last year when i bought the ‘puter? (march, 2006).

hewlett packard? i’m now off warranty.

thanks, ken

I would go to the microsoft update website and have it scan for updates. Sounds like your drivers are not updated. You can also have it updated at Office Depot etc., for about $35. They have a disc with about a hundred updates already to go. You can’t buy the disc, but they install them for you. It takes about 10 minutes.

The first thing I do after reinstalling XP is this:

  1. Right-click "My Computer"
  2. Choose "Properties"
  3. Click the "Advanced" tab
  4. Under the "Performance" section, click "Settings"
  5. Under the "Visual Effects" tab, uncheck all but the LAST TWO boxes - leave ONLY the LAST TWO boxes checked
  6. Click Apply/OK
  7. Reboot if prompted to

See if the PC runs any smoother now.

You don’t use the “Smooth edges of screen fonts” option? That one makes a big difference to the look of text on my screen and, in fact, it’s the only option I have checked.

Your drivers have not been reinstalled. Go to HP’s website, search on your computer model, and look for “download drivers” or a similar option. You want the video drivers that HP will have somewhere on their site.

I’ve re-installed dozens of computers and this is almost always a problem. Get the latest drivers and your problem will be solved.

Right, first thing to do is to go to microsoft update and get all your updates, should be about 90 of them. Hope you have high speed internet.

Second, go here , http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html and download the windows xp tweak guide, then start tweaking.

You just gotta use the font smoothing called ClearType. It’s very easy on the eyes.

don’t take this is a “get linux” comment but, this would be a great time to try a linux distro out. i would try either ubuntu or pclinuxos.

unlike XP, KDE(what you see on the screen) with pclinuxos will allow you to make all kinds of changes so you can make it whatever you want.

Do NOT download this update,

Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)

also, don’t download video card drivers from windows update, get them direct from the video card manufacturer website, or check out www.guru3d.com
