When illegal immigration supporters attack... and I'm the only one minding the fort

Yesterday, David Leonhardt of the New York Times mounted a vigorous - and successful - smear attempt against Lou Dobbs ("Truth, Fiction and Lou Dobbs"). Whether you like Dobbs or hate him, he's a proxy for the immigration "debate", and this minor victory wasn't just a victory for the NYT, it was also a minor victory for those who support and/or profit from illegal immigration.

What's worse is that - in a country with 300 million people or so - I was one of the few people who pushed back, defending Dobbs or going after some of those who piled on.

If many other people had gotten involved, this smear wouldn't have been so successful, and that would have also played some small role in the immigration debate. The MSM and blogs feed off each other: blogs retransmit the message from the MSM, but at the same time major blogs can have an impact on what the MSM does. Likewise down the chain, with minor blogs having an impact on their more popular cousins.

So, for instance, if a major blogger had retransmitted the NYT's smear and then been discredited because of it, that would filter up to the NYT and other MSM sources and they might get a bit of a clue. I can't stress that point enough.

So, I'd like to once again encourage FReepers to get out there to other sites that discuss immigration matters and present the other side of the story. Don't get into useless arguments with other commenters, concentrate mainly on the blogger. If the blogger might be convinced to oppose illegal immigration, just provide some basic facts about the specific subject they're discussing. If they could never be convinced, take apart their argument in an attempt to discredit them. Search for weak spots or lies or misleading statements in their argument, and point that out to their readers.

Here are a few links to find out who's discussing immigration matters:

memeorandum.com

Technorati search for immigration on major blogs

Digg search for immigration

And, here's a list of just some of those who helped propagate the smear. You might find my comments under LonewackoDotCom, TLB, or NoMoreBlatherDotCom:

Good for you.

I don’t think the smear will ultimately be successful. NYT wants to silence Dobbs.

Meanwhile, Hugo Chavez was shocked by massive protests after he shut down a popular opposition TV station.
