An open letter to Fred Thompson
Rochester Pundit ^ | 5-20-07 | Rochester Pundit

Mr. Thompson,

I am writing this letter to ask that you seek the Republican nomination for President of the United States. The party needs you. Those of us who identify with the principles of modern conservatism need you. Your country needs you. Ok, I'll stop with the melodrama, but I really do want you to run.

You've no doubt noticed that the race for the Republican nomination is turning into little more than a Ronald Reagan sound-alike contest. We have the former mayor of New York and the former governor of Massachusetts waxing (kind of) eloquent about shrinking the size and scope of government. Save us, Fred. Oops. There's that melodrama again, but we really do need saving.

No harm in urging Fred to run (daily) but methinks he has a plan is is executing it beautifully.

We need saving from the nonstarters like Tancredo (who?)

Yes, whatever little girl wrote this is exactly correct. We need saving from true conservatives, otherwise the GOP platform might stand for something again.

Dear Mr. Rochester Pundit,

There is already in the race a true conservative, and his name is Duncan Hunter.

Too bad the forces of the “also ran” candidates are trying to jump the thread.

This is a joke, right? It has to be a joke. Maybe he can debate Dennis Kucinich...the Tanc takes on the Kuch...pay-per-view. The winner becomes the second least known man running for president.

What’s your problem with Tom Tancredo? Unelectable? I’ve had it with the “electable” candidates. They’re the ones striking deals on amnesty.

Ah, the amnesty argument rears its ugly head. Without getting into how the Tanc plans to deport 12 million people, allow me to just say that I am not a one-issue voter. Tancredo is, at best, a one-issue candidate. I have no problem with him per se; he’s just not presidential material. Can you really argue that he’s a better option that Thompson? How do you figure he’s more of a conservative?

Holy Dukakis, Batman, is he really billing himself as "the Tanc?"

Relax, my intrepid sidekick, he is simply describing what his campaign will do.

Ah, the amnesty argument rears its ugly head.

This isn't about amnesty, though amnesty is ugly and wrong.

Without getting into how the Tanc plans to deport 12 million people

Chris Simcox has a very workable solution for deporting 12 million people, and it's my understanding that Tancredo endorses something very similar. You don't deport them. You secure the borders and stop the flood. Then, as illegals come into contact with law enforcement, you deport them. Some number of them will live in this country as long as they want, but those who break our laws are forced to leave.

Tancredo is, at best, a one-issue candidate

Tancredo, across the board, is the most conservative candidate. Gun control, abortion, pro-growth, WOT, immigration, schools (what other candidate is saying we need to abolish the federal Department of Education created by Jimmy Carter?).

Can you really argue that he’s a better option that Thompson? How do you figure he’s more of a conservative?

I’ve got nothing against Fred Thompson, yet. But there are questions about Thompson that haven’t been answered, IMO, and won’t be fully explored until he’s a candidate in the race.

If he gets in the race, he’ll be the frontrunner from the start, and the media will very quickly go after him – as it would any GOP frontrunner, especially one supported by the conservatives.

My concern about Thompson is that because he’s waiting to announce, these questions don’t get asked or answered until he’s the nominee – and if we don’t like the answers we’re stuck.

Is Thompson a globalist? He was a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

What about McCain-Feingold? He was a major proponent of it, but as I understand it now he’s said the way it worked wasn’t how he thought it would.

He was known as the “Tennessee Stud” when he was in the Senate. Granted, he was unmarried, but are there personal-life scandals waiting to come out?

He worked on the campaign of the “Great Conciliator” Sen. Howard Baker who never missed an opportunity to broker a deal with the Democrats. Baker is the one who said, “What did the President know and when did he know it?” Thompson is credited in several sources as having given Baker that line. Baker was at best a moderate, but more like Arlen Specter.

Thompson was McCain’s campaign co-chair in 2000.

Few candidates have nothing to hide, but Fred Thompson’s background leaves open questions that the conservative base of the Republican Party should have answered before they declare him their candidate. Perhaps all this has been satisfactorily addressed for you, but I’m waiting to hear what Thompson has to say, now, about NAFTA and CAFTA.

I'm not saying Thompson is bad. I'm not saying he's not conservative. I am saying I've got questions that aren't being answered while he's posting videos on the Internet to Michael Moore.

Tancredo is the only candidate in the race who I don't have to explain away the positions he's taken, or defend left-leaning positions.

If he was single, it doesn’t matter what he did in his personal life so long as it was legal.

The thought of seeing you debate Hillary Clinton makes me grin the way I grin when I finish covering the toilet bowl with saran wrap. It just wouldn't be fair.
How true.
