Fred Thompson in 1994: Let The Woman Decide - Monday, April 09, 2007 @ 3:06:23 PM

During his first run for the U.S. Senate, Fred Thompson said in an interview to a libertarian Republican newsletter that the ultimate decision to have an abortion "must be made by the woman."

The comments were made in the July/August issue of Republican Liberty, the official newsletter of the Republican Liberty Caucus.

In the interview, Thompson was asked: "Some conservatives got flustered by your comments on abortion and Roe vs. Wade. Would you like to explain your position on abortion?"

Thompson answered: "Government should stay out of it. No public financing. The ultimate decision must be made by the woman.

Oops, Fred just ran counter to the Giuliani doctrine - abortion is a right, and so is public funding of abortion if the woman is poor.

Man, y'all should run away from the pro-life issue like scalded squirrels. It's killing Rudy.

middle aged women especially resent the idea that a successful older man “trades in” his wife for a younger model, much younger in this case.

Except that nearly 20 years elapsed between Fred's amicable divorce and his re-marriage.

Compare that to Rudy's bitter divorce and his affairs while still married.

Just a taste of what he’ll get if he runs. His fans here (and I am among them) should not expect anything less than the same vetting process Rudy is getting.

Thompson changed his mind on abortion, just like Reagan.

Or mabe he changed his colors on abortion, just like Reagan. Reagan was never even nearly as pro-life as he should have been. Abortion is a black hole of an abomination that our nation has been spiraling into for 34 years - 80 Million Americans! No other issue can hold a candle to that because not even light can escape it. Abortion is NOT a mere political expedient.

so what, he still married a woman young enough to be his daughter. his mother in law is 4 years younger then he is. and while divorced, he had a stable of babes, including laurie morgan as I recall.

again, I could care less. my only point is - the idea the the MSM isn’t going to run with this stuff should Thompson be the nominee, is incorrect. they surely will.

And my point is, the Rudy boosters seem to think that Rudy can win with far more of this kind of baggage than Fred has. So what is your point?

The fact that the guy's a stud doesn't hurt him in my book. And by the time a woman is 35, you'd think she wouldn't be subject to "cradle robbing" stories. It's not unheard of for mature women to marry older, successful men, especially if they want to have children.

I completely agree with you. Fred will have to take his hits along with all the others. He and Jeri are adults- they know it’s coming- and they’ll handle it.

In the meantime- Run, Fred, RUN!

LOL. This is still worlds better than Abortiani's position.

Next the Rudy-bots will be hitting Thompson for being bald...

Here's the difference. I believe Thompson had a sincere change of opinion on this issue. I don't believe that about Mitt Romney--the GOP's John Kerry.

Rudy made the decision easy for me by being a charter member of the Margaret Sanger fan club.

The only issue Thompson ever got excited by in the Senate was the McCain/Feingold bill. He was tepid about pro-life. How much confidence would you have that he would nominate strict constructionists if elected? Rudy, on the other hand, despite his rhetoric, has said over and over he would nominate strict constructionists in the mold of Roberts and Alito.

"rudy, the LIBERAL TURKEY" is also SOLIDLY ANTI-2d Amendment.

NO NRA person (and i'm a LIFE member) will EVER support him in ANY way.

should he be the nominee, i'll go fishing that day. FYI, i will NOT be alone on the lake.

“Fred Thompson believes Roe V wade is bad constitutional law, and the issue should return to the states.

Rudy Giuliani believes Roe v Wade is good constitutional law.”

False. Rudy has said it would be up to strict constructionists to determine. You are spreading disinformation.
