We will see, I'm a Thompson fan and don't know of anything about Duncan Hunter, and you haven't said anything about him except that he's great. Why is he so great?
1. Duncan Hunter left college to go to Vietnam as a ranger in the U.S. Army. I believe he did a couple of tours before returning home to get a law degree and begin his professional career. When he went to Congress, he became a member of the Armed Services Committee and has been in that position for many years. I don't believe that Fred Thompson was in the military. He's played that role on TV and in the movies, but he doesn't have the real experience. When he was in the U.S. Senate, he wasn't particularly connected to the military or military issues.
2. Duncan Hunter realizes that our manufacturing industries are important to national security. The winner of every major war for about the last 160 years has been the side with the stronger manufacturing base. (That's something that I've noticed and not something from the candidates's website.) Duncan Hunter wants to set policies that will help protect some of our manufacturing as an issue of national security.
3. Duncan Hunter is not opposed to trade, but he believes that we should compete on a level playing field. If we are going to allow foreign products into our country without tariffs, they should be reciprocating for us. If they won't, then the deal is a bad deal. He would avoid bad deals.
4. Duncan Hunter realizes that illegal immigration is a national security issue. He was instrumental in having a border fence erected south of San Diego. That fence reduced crime tremendously in that area. He wants to extend the fencing in order to reduce more crime. He wants to deport all of the illegal aliens in our country and force them to return through legal means in appropriate numbers.
5. Duncan Hunter is 100% pro-life. Personally, I could live with eighty or ninety percent pro-life. Many people consider me only eighty or ninety percent pro-life.
6. Duncan Hunter is 100% pro-gun.
These are just a few quick points in his favor. On most of these issues, I prefer where he stands to where Fred Thompson stands. I still harbor some bitterness towards Mr. Thompson for voting "not guilty" on one of the impeachment counts against Clinton. I still harbor some frustration that he turned the hearings into Clinton/Gore treason with the Chinese fundraising to an overall study of campaign finance issues. Fred Thompson isn't a bad guy, and he's far better than Giuliani or McCain.
