I switched over to Purina - it's made in the U.S..

I don't believe it about Purina which is U.S. manufactured. I doubt they get their supplies from any foreign sources, as I suspect Menu Food did (China). I think there is a hysteria out there now from people whose pets croaked from old age or disease and they are now jumping on the bandwagon. I've been feeding my cats, one of whom is ancient (about 20 yrs) Purina Natural dry cat food and Friskies canned food, for years now, and even the old cat still eats a lot and both are doing fine. I refuse to join the hysteria. And if my old kitty ends up dying in the next year or so, it's because she's 20 YEARS OLD, not because of Purina cat food. Everyone should settle down here, and only respond to primary sources, not secondary or hearsay reports, especially from pet owners themselves who are going to blame any death of a pet on the pet food for the near future.

Here's a link on cat food. The site is by a lady vet who is very well educated & informed when it comes to cat nutrition.

I don't see anything on the FDA's site about the dry food being included.

http://www.fda.gov/opacom/7alerts.html

I have one elderly dog and one young adult dog on Beneful Dry as well as a cat on Purina Dry. Have seen absolutely no symptoms or any problems with any of them.

Here's another link pertinent to all of this mess:

By the way, here's the latest recall on treats given to dogs.

Petrapport Issues Recall of Pig Ear Dog Treats Because of Salmonella Contamination
Contact:
Luciana DeLeon
201-854-6157

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- North Bergen, NJ -- March 23, 2007 -- Petrapport, Inc. is voluntarily recalling pig ear dog treats it imported from a Chilean company during the period August 2006 through December 2006 because the pig ears have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious infections in dogs, and, if there is cross contamination, young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

I know, I haven't seen anything by the FDA either. The site I got this info from was the first I'd seen about dry food.

When the wet food problem started remember what we first heard; 9 cats died. Then a week or so later I read the time line of the problem and saw those 9 cats were the cats that Menu Foods tested their food on. Did Menu Foods issue a recall right away? Not that I read. What I read was that they waited two weeks then issued the "voluntary recall". Why did they wait two weeks? Maybe because the FDA was about to hop on it? I don't know.

All I do know is that I don't have 100% trust in the manufacturers right now. If a couple more weeks go by and there's no big announcement in the press I'll feel a bit better.

Everyone should settle down here, and only respond to primary sources, not secondary or hearsay reports, especially from pet owners themselves who are going to blame any death of a pet on the pet food for the near future.

Nutro dry is also manufactured at their own plants in the US -- my guess is that it's the same for most other brands. Most of the companies who have contracted wet foods to Menu Foods don't have the capacity to produce wet food (a very different process, obviously), and from what I've read, there aren't any other companies, either in the US or Canada, with the capacity of Menu Foods to take up the slack.

The cautionary tale here is cut out the processed wet food, IMHO, until this is resolved. And I'm not sure I have much faith that we'll get the true skinny on this, if the source is the Chinese wheat gluten. Heck, I read a story yesterday quoting a scientist at the Homeland-Security-funded lab at Cornell, IIRC, saying that testing the gluten is a real problem, due to its sticky consistency. Anyone who's handled the stuff (I use it to make whole wheat bread), can vouch for that, but the moaning from the scientists isn't very reassuring when you consider that there's hardly a bread product sold in this country that doesn't contain wheat gluten.

Perhaps the best we can hope for here is that this will be a warning to other companies seeking to cut costs with questionable suppliers, and I'm speaking of the human food supply here.

And yes, I agree that the hysteria is overblown. I asked our vet, who's got a thriving practice, if he had any poisoning cases. He had one dog that died, but the cause was highly questionable, since the animal's heart was previously diseased. He also has one feline patient whose test results haven't come back yet, but he's skeptical on that one also. Two "maybe's" out of several hundred patients.

YES!!!! My cats are sick fro Iams Original. I am amazed, but not surprised to see this thread. I posted in the CatForum, plus I called Iams and made a report. They (Iams) took the info and code numbers from a new bag of dry food I bought at PetCo last Saturday. My cats are lethargic, not sick, but completely out of their normal routine. All they do is lie around all day, and drink water.

All---I have heard they are looking into NUTRO DRY DOG FOOD and OL ROY Dog Food. Supposingly making dogs pee blood.

~~~~~
Here is a list for you:
FOODS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH MENUFOODS:
Humane Society of Vero Beach-Indian River County Florida's Director of Education Janet Winikoff has put together a list of pet foods who are not associated with Menu Foods:
http://petsitusa.com/blog/?p=210.
"For those individuals who would prefer to feed their pet a food from a company unaffiliated with Menu Foods, we have provided the list below.... The following food companies have indicated by phone or on their website that NONE of their foods have been impacted by the Menu Foods recall. We will be following this story and updating the list daily."
Did you also call the FDA? From some of the comments I read on the ichmo site it sounds like you might have to insist they take a report.
What does your vet say?
This is too spooky.
I just cleaned out my cats bowl of all Iams. As I said before, they are not "sick," but not all normal. It all started when I opened the new bag I bought Saturday. All they do is lie around and drink water. I am heading out now to pick a couple different bags of Purina, as they "claim" on their website that their food is completely safe. All I have ever fed my cats is Iams, so I hate to change. They have not been sick enough to go to a vet, but since I am reading all the reports, I suspect I will take them for a visit today. When I called Iams, they seemed to think it was no big deal.
We all know this from Free Republic:
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” — Margaret Mead
I cannot let this drop, as I laid awake last night thinking of my dog and wondering, when did he start that barking.
This is a note I sent off to my son at 4 A.M. this morning.
Hi Kid,
I was laying in bed thinking just how smart dogs are.
My Mom used to always say, "dogs know".
Pokey, the dog I had when I was a child knew when the vet pulled up outside
on his house call, she would run upstairs and hide under the bed. No one
told her it was him, but that was the only person she would do that to.
Can you remember when Durango started barking, when we were eating. I am
thinking it was around Fathers Day or Dad's birthday or your birthday or so, I can't
remember.
I remember you saying why is he doing that. Remember us saying he started doing that
and we didn't know why. We thought he was just getting old and his
barking didn't bother him, cause he was going deaf.
HE WAS TELLING US ABOUT THE FOOD BEING BAD............He hadn't done
that for all those years suddenly he started. And that is when the bad
food came out and why they tested food in December, dogs were showing
signs of sickness.
It was around early last summer. That is why the barking. he was
still doing it at Christmas
When he got more lethargic and sleeping more he stopped, must have been
sick then, which we contributed to old age.
I guess I am so fricking mad that we unknowingly fed him rat poison, in
those cans and pouches thinking it was such a treat for him, when they, Menu Foods
could have warned us months back.
My Mom was so right saying "dogs know".
I do believe this to be true and Durango knew about the food being bad and was trying
to tell us.
Love,
Mom
So, what did they know, (Menu Foods) and when did they know it.
My God, to think that they had clues to this last June and did't put out the warning till March 16th of this year.
Great info here: Info for lawsuit and also info to talk to a reporter from the USA Today.
http://www.bigskyblog.com/index.php/2007/03/17/pet-food-recall/
In here someone said that they investigated and found out that Menu Foods they had their first complaint June 12, 2006.
This is such an outrage to me and for all that have lost pets to know that even the AVMA knew of it on the first of June.
Could you please ping your list, thank you.
