Vanity: Is anyone having problems with Windows Media Player 9 since the release of Vista?

Posted on 03/16/2007 7:59:13 AM PDT by reformed_democrat

I can still purchase and download music, but Media Player won't play it. When I click on the song title, a pop-up tells me to upgrade my DRM components. I click OK, then this error message comes up first:

The security upgrade cannot be performed because the server is not available. Try again later.
Click again, and this comes up:
Windows Media Player is not installed properly. Reinstall the Player.
After 3 removals and redownloads, including a trip to MS update, the same errors occur.

I contacted the download site, and their tech support tried to walk me through a manual DRM upgrade (delete the system folder, try to redownload), but no luck.

I e-mailed Microsoft, and was directed to either the self-help forums (as if I didn't try that already) or assisted support, which would involve a fee.

Prior to the release of Vista, I was able to buy and download music. Now, I can't. My OS doesn't seem to be supported anymore, and I hate to upgrade because I have two computers networked to this one. Yes, I'm one of those Luddites who refuse to change because I finally got everything networked and functioning.

Windows 2000 Professional.

I avoided XP because I'd heard about the problems people were having when they couldn't activate it in the time allowed.

I wanted to get your thoughts on this. I saw you posted the article about Vista and NIST.

And I have nothing but respect for the person who helped me to understand the Shroud -- but that's another subject.

"Disregard or allow?"

Click the tab for "Allow".

You are coming to a sad realization, disregard or allow?

If I could get over my addiction to Sims 2, I could run Linux and force the rest of my household to follow suit.

Unfortunately, I am weak in spirit . . .

Why are you on Media Player 9? 11 is the current version and 10 came out several years ago. That may be your problem. Also, what service are you using to download music, and in what format do the files come?

Media Player 9 is the latest version Windows 2000 can run. I haven't upgraded to XP (and don't plan to). The files are MP3 files, but the problem is not with the files, it's with the licenses. I downloaded from WalMart (yes, I even shop there on-line) and can't get the "security upgrade" to take. Windows Media Player will not play the files without the license, and I can't get the license without the upgrade.

I didn't know it was possible to apply Digital Rights Management to an MP3 file.

The WalMart site is very clear about backing up your licenses. They'll allow you to re-download anything you bought from them as long as you have your licenses on the computer. They even have instructions on moving your licenses to your new computer so your music will work.

I have a very similar problem. Win2k pro, wmp 9, suddenly NO wma can be played, I got the message requiring DRM upgrade and then "Windows Media Player is not installed properly. Reinstall the Player."
Any solution yet?
P.S. No walmart, another on-line music provider.

No solution, just the never-ending "recommendation" to upgrade the OS. I don't have time to waste on Microsoft's beta testing (here's an interesting article: Microsoft Suffers Latest Blow As NIST Bans Windows Vista) since they have never put out an OS that didn't require numerous fixes out of the box.

I'm going in search of a third party program to allow me to download licenses into WMP 9. If I have any luck, I'll post a link on this thread.

Any news on this? I recently noticed the same problem. All my legal DRM protected material doesn’t play no more. (and that’s quite a lot)

Still nothing to report. The only way I install music now is from a CD -- very unhandy.

I did notice that Microsoft extended the warranty on their XBox 360. Too many units have failed, so the company will allow you to return the box to them for repair at no charge. However, the symptoms are very specific and only refer to one problem. No word on whether other problems are covered or not.

This leads me to believe someone is finally pressuring Microsoft to do something about its abysmal customer service. I hope they address the operating system support issue sometime soon. I don’t mind being "left out" when a newer product comes out – I just want my old product to continue working.
