Bonuses now top $20,000 for a nonprior service recruit or Navy veteran who signs a six-year contract as an intelligence specialist 2nd or 3rd class. Reenlistment bonuses equal $15,000 for six years and $7,500 for three years.
Intelligence Specialist 3rd Class Alvin Augustus got interested in the Navy after seeing a listing on a job-seeker web site. Augustus had joined the Navy straight out of high school, but didn’t make it through boot camp.

Uhh...it's not rocket science. If you spend >$100,000 training someone to do a certain job, it's not such a bad idea to give them some incentive to stay on...
my friend is thinking of joining the army and he says they provide the college funds after you join, not before

yes, signing bonuses are awesome, but i am just wondering why the military does that when to my knowledge, no other organization provides signing bonuses of that magnitude to high school graduates or for that matter any signing bonus.

i am comparing what high school graduates get in non-military organizations. My friend is wanting to join the military and he was surprised that they were going to give him a sign up bonus right out of high school. He did not tell me how much, but he said it was a lot of money. I asked him why the secret but he just did not want to talk about it

I believe you misunderstand the recruiting messages.. there is a potential signing bonus up to $40k (and I've actually seen higher for the Navy's nuclear service).. No, a fresh out of high school kid isn't going to get a check for $40k to sign up- I've never heard of this happening.. but the military doesn't exclusively recruit from High School. I have heard of, and personally known, a couple of college engineering students who were given fairly attractive sign-on bonuses- comparable to competitive corporate recruiting programs.
Now, this isn't lying to High Schoolers either, because they do qualify for the Montgomery GI bill which will provide money for college that could be worth up to a similar amount. This isn't given as a check but can be considered a part of compensation.
To a high-schooler, $2,000 is a lot of money.

why the huge sign up bonuses ?
yes, i understand specific skills. But my friend who is joining right out of high school is getting a huge signing bonus which he does not want to talk about. So i am wondering why the huge signing bonuses for high school graduates ?
i am just a regular guy from oklahoma whose friend is going to join the army. If i knew the answer, i would not be asking the question because my friend is not telling me either
I tried looking for non-military organizations who give huge sign up bonuses to high school graduates who are fresh out of high school, but i could not find any. If you know of a non-military organization that does that, let me know, thanks.

I volunteer for many things, but nobody has ever told me that they will give me money if i just volunteer.
i understand re-enlistment bonuses, but what about the huge bonuses for high school graduates, just out of high school ?
i like my friend getting a bonus, but he wont tell me why he got the bonus for volunteering
