Sidenote: The philosopher Michael Polanyi who Godwin quotes in this piece is well worth checking into. If you're a philosophy-minded conservative/libertarian type, Polanyi's ideas are likely to provide structure for important intuitions you've had but that you hadn't quite gotten around to wrapping words and arguments around. He is very important and nowhere near as well known as he should be. Many who read him experience a mild epiphany. I certainly did, and I thought I was pretty much epiphany-proof at this point.
