Dumb Computer Question

Posted on 12/18/2006 7:17:05 PM PST by Ex-Wretch

Not understanding much about computers, I have been getting lots of "The page cannot be displayed" messages when I go clicking. This is a relatively new problem. Also, it seems like everything takes much longer to come up online and pages don't always fill completely. Bottom line is "Cannot find server or DNS Error Internet Explorer".

I am using IE7 but am having similar problems using Firefox2. My cable modem checks out. I have deleted temporary files and cookies often. Still, I am getting frustrated by the slow and erratic performance.

Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Try this:

Open a command window and type the following command:

NETSH WINSOCK RESET CATALOG

See if that fixes it.

You may want to manually configure your DNS Server locations in your IP config. Make the primary DNS server your default gateway address, and your secondary DNS server as 4.2.2.2. See if that helps.

Another troubleshooting quick-check: at a command prompt, type "ipconfig /flushdns" no quotes. This resets your DNS properties, and forces your internet device (DSL or cable modem) to issue you a new DNS Server.

When this happened to me, I had to try different channels on my wireless router because other rf devices were interfering.

Comcast Cable. No Router. Direct connected. Internet only. No VoIP telephone or cable tv. Just broadband internet service.

Grrrrrrrrrr! :)

P.S. - To Noumenon and Space Wrangler - I sent private reply to both of you.
P.P.S. - If this comes up as a multiple/duplicate post it's because even when I hit the SEND button it comes up with that error message!

Yes, Windows XP - Media Center. HP Pavillion with AMD Dual Processor. 2 gig memory. Had this machine since mid-September. It came with 320 gig hard drive partitioned 20gig C drive 280 gig D drive. About 3 weeks ago I tried to compress C drive because it only had about a gig left on it. I also put one of the 3 restore discs I originally made into the CD/DVD drive but it didn't seem to do anything. I have noticed this problem has developed since then.

Turn off the Phishing filter in IE7 for faster performance. In the top menu, Tools > Phishing filter.

As for the compression, can you be more specific? Did you simply check the "compress drive to save space" box in the drive properties? The problem of DNS errors wouldn't seem to be related to that, but you never know.

Yes. And as I recall, I did something in Disk Cleanup also.

BTW, still getting DNS error messages.

Have you called tech support at your cable company? A few months ago I was having an intermittent problem & it turned out to be a bad cable coming up to my house. Swapping to a new modem didn't help. My TV reception never showed a problem, though it uses the same cable.

Thanks! I turned it off. Hope that makes a difference.

Still getting those DNS error messages, though.

Do you use a software firewall? After updating to IE7 it might have asked if you wanted to allow internet access to Internet Explorer 7 and another program called svchost.exe. I think that if you block svchost.exe with your firewall it can sometimes cause problems.

Yes, last week I called and they walked me through some stuff. Had me delete temporary files and cookies. Said to make sure I did that. Modem checked out ok. They said as long as I was getting my home page and other sites that they were delivering. Said problem was at my machine - not their delivery.

Just as an additional note - every time I try to repond to everyone's posts or private replys I am still getting the DNS error messages.

Yes, I have Norton Internet Security and SystemWorks - plus whatever you get with Windows XP and IE7.

Is your connection intermittent? You stay on for a minute and then it disconnects?

Connection is solid. It's just in navigating from site to site - or even within the same site (like here at FR going from forum to private reply or to post a forum reply - it does not consistently come up when I click. The DNS error message comes up A LOT!
